If I had known that before...

I wonder if it is possible to change the user back to the pre-backup name in Ubuntu?

Too late to redo the backup, I guess..

I'm still not sure what's going on here.

That's what schrauber asked earlier: Does the filecard show a media location or does it not?

When you create a backup that is going to be restored to a new user or new computer, you need to at the least include Local Media. This will backup and restore all the link files to your original video/audio files that Lightworks creates when you import them into your project.

Khaver,

It seems that this has been changed, at least with backups created and restored with V14.1. The link files are reestablished properly into a new empty media location even when all media have been excluded on backup.

I've just tested that with Lightworks media locations removed after backup and empty one added before restore.

Crosscheck truly appreciated.

It is possible to change the user back, but it will not help because the original Lightworks Media Location is missing, as you told us before!

It is most likeley possible to reveal the linkage to your files, but you have to answer the questions precisely!

Okay, when I see your screenshots, it's clear.

You have no media problem.
You have no offline media.

You have an incomplete project!

You did not create a backup of your project, but only have an archive of "Clip - 00103"

Edit: A project backup has such folder names:
Project - Project name.Archive

I hope you didn't invest too much time in that project. At least you know now where the button is placed to make backups of your projects.

I have tried to answer your questions fully and unambiguously, so I'm not sure what information is missing.
Is a file card not the metadata? That is shown in the screenshot.

I don't know what you mean by incomplete project. It seems rather that have an incomplete backup. The project media are all there, in the location I specified:
/media/agamemnon/Montage/Local Bands/Audrey/2017 Aug 25 StGeorge and subdirectories therein.

The media location contained in the LW backup (i.e., backup without media) is the old path:
/media/priam/Montage/Local Bands/Audrey/2017 Aug 25 StGeorge and subdirectories therein.
I believe the difference in user (as a result of a new installation of Ubuntu) is the reason for the problem restoring the backup: the links in the backup file do not point to /media/agamamnon, they point to /media/priam. I realize it was not a brilliant idea to change the user name when I did the fresh installation of Ubuntu.

Barring a more elegant solution, should I consider re-importing all media files? Will Sequence #1 and the edits in it be preserved once the media have been re-imported?

Clip 00103 is the only one that appears in the project files when I do relink missing and select the /media/agamemnon/Montage/Local Bands/Audrey/2017 Aug 25 StGeorge directory.

Yes I did put a great deal of time into this project.

I know where the backup button is. I simply backed up using the default (without media) because the project had been built with the default import method (Create Link).

The problem is that you made a mistake while creating the backup.
You have archived the wrong one.
The backup / archive is not useful for your purpose.

Do you have any other backups?
Is the old folder / usr / share / lightworks /
from your previous installation still somehow present (perhaps as a system backup or the like)?

Ouch!

No, the old system drive was wiped when I reinstalled Ubuntu.
So apparently what you back up depends on where the mouse was hovering when you hit the backup command. In that case the menu item "Lightworks Archive" is somewhat deceiving, as to me it meant an archive of the project.

It might be advisable for future manuals to include instructions on backing up a whole project, rather than simply state that it can be done.

This is a pity.

In the example you would just create an archive of sequence # 1 (with the included clips).

Your project may contain other sequences
Maybe also clips, subclips, prints, etc. which are not in the sequence, but which you still want to use.

To secure (almost) everything, you need a project backup.

In LW 12 this was done via the export tool,

...but since LW14 it can be found in the project settings:

A good suggestion.

Yes, I agree with you.

A good description how to create a Project Backup in the User Guide is mandatory in order to minimize the risk of such a misunderstanding, and resulting loss of data and time. The automatic backups are explained in more detail, but that doesn't help much when migrating projects.

Thanks for your guidance and sympathy. In future I won't be fooled by that zany shark. Now I have to try to reconsruct the project.
