I tried removing pops, clicks and noise on an old recording with Audacity, but it doesn’t work at all with recordings made over a century ago. Someone told me that I should look for a ‘declicker’ audio effect in my editing software. I can’t find it in Lightworks but I did find a lot of other audio effects of which I don’t quite understand what they do.

So is there a tutorial that shows me how to remove pops, clicks and noise on old recordings? Preferably an easy way, but I have time to tinker around and learning a more complicated way if there isn’t an easy one.
(word of warning; I’m going to test it on a recording made in 1901 )

Thanks.

Hello,

I would think, removing pops and clicks is something you cannot do with Lightworks, since there are level controls and EQ presets only.

For recordings from 1901, I think you'll need forensic tools to denoise.

If what Audacity provides isn't enough for the job, climb into pro level DAWs which support a large variety of paid plugins to de-noise, de-click, de-ess, de-whatever, but be prepared to face a steep learning curve and possibly, results not as good as you expect.
It's better to travel well than to arrive...

Lightworks can't reasonably do it. I've done it with Audacity. It's quite a bit of work and won't yield perfect results.

Thanks.

I’ll try again with Audacity.

But if I would do it with a DAW what DAW would you recommend? I think I have Garageband but I’ve never used it.
By the way I had to google what a DAW was and I had to laugh because I was saying to a friend the other day that I had trouble editing to music and that I should practice that more. He suggested to become a musician

You run a Mac I suspect. Garageband isn't the kind of DAW I meant. More something like 'Logic Pro X' or 'Avid ProTools'.

Nice DAWs not too expensive: reaper, ardour, Mixbus,

but then you still need plugins etc..

for general noise removal a free plugin called noise-repellent works well,

for vinyl restauration etc there are a lot of specific plugins just for that task..

Yes I run a Mac. Thanks for the tips. I'll keep it in mind.
