How can I format the text box to prevent cutting off of some flamboyant typefaces?

Try adding a space after the last letter. Unfortunately Lightworks' title effect is extremely limited in functionality. It doesn't allow kerning adjustment, which is what you need to handle this sort of problem.

Personally I create titles as PNG artwork in Photoshop.

Thanks for the tip, unfortunately, its not just the first or last letter, this can be solved with adding a space, as you suggested. It is also the top and bottom of some typefaces that get cut off and adding an empty line does not solve this.

Yes, I've seen that too. The title effect is unfortunately really only appropriate for the most rudimentary of titles in my opinion. When it was designed no more was expected of it than the ability to place plain text supers in the frame. We now expect a great deal more.

It's not something that can be easily fixed with a user effect either, or I would try and do it.
