Delta key with blendjwrlDeltaKeyWithBlend.fxKeyOctober 18 2018December 23 2018

This effect revisits the same territory as khaver's "DeltaMask" effect (below), but goes about things in a somewhat different way. As a result it's more GPU intensive than khaver's effect, and has a different range of adjustments. Because this keying technique depends heavily on the differences between foreground and reference images, there will always be occasions where one will work better than the other. If you do a lot of this sort of work you should have both in your effects toolkit.

Three video inputs are provided, Fg, In1 and In2. The Fg input is always used as the foreground layer, but the reference and background layers can be independently selected from either In1 or In2. Additionally, the background can be blanked to allow use of the effect output with external blend and/or DVE effects.

Key clip, gain, erosion, expansion and feathering can all be adjusted. Play the MP4 to see what it can do.

This is khaver's take on the delta mask or difference matte effect. The screen caps above show the foreground track, the static matching background and the resultant mask generated using the "Show" checkbox. You will need 3 video tracks. V1 should be the foreground clip, V2 the static background freeze frame and V3 the new background you want added. Once you set up the delta key as best as you can, use the routing panel to route the output of the delta mask effect to the foreground input of a blend effect and your new background track to the background input.

When the "Show" checkbox is checked, the output is a B&W mask. You can feed this to the "Mask" input of the "Masked Blend" effect instead of the regular "Blend" effect if desired. When it's unchecked the alpha channel of the foreground clip is replaced with the mask. When the "Split Screen" box is checked, you will get a split screen of your foreground and static background tracks so using the "Background Gain" slider you can match exposure as close as possible.

Analogue lumakeyjwrlAnalogLumakey.fxKeyJuly 30 2019July 30 2019

This is an extremely specialised effect, and is intended to produce a keying behaviour similar to one of the GVG series of analogue vision mixers. It's unlikely that you will need it if all that you want is a simple lumakey.

The keyer is similar in operation to the Editshare Lumakey effect, but there are some notable differences. In this version "Tolerance" is called "Clip" and "Invert" has become "Invert key". These were the industry standard names used for these functions in analogue keyers. When the key clip is exceeded by the image luminance the Lightworks keyer passes the luminance value unchanged, which an analogue keyer will not. This keyer turns the alpha channel fully on instead, which is consistent with the way that an analogue keyer works.

Regardless of whether the key is inverted or not, the clip setting works from black at 0% to white at 100%. Key softness, instead of being calculated entirely from within the keyed area is produced symmetrically around the key's edges. Both of these are more consistent with the way that analogue keyers behave. The keyer's alpha channel can either replace the foreground's existing alpha channel or can be gated with it. It can then optionally be used to key the foreground over the background or passed on to other effects. In that mode the background is blanked. This last functionality was never provided in the analogue world so there is no equivalent to match it to.

ChromaKey despill is a background based despill tool. It can change the green/blue spill in the foreground image with colour derived from a background layer. The actual background can be used, or a colour Matte effect can be generated and used instead.

It can also be used to quickly and simply change overall green/blue colours in a scene, ie., change a spring landscape to an autumn one. The screenshot should give an idea of its use.

Lumakey and mattejwrlLumakeyAndMatte.fxKeyJune 8 2018February 22 2019

This is designed to generate a key from the foreground video and use that key to superimpose the foreground over the background, fill the foreground key shape with a flat matte colour, or fill the key shape with another video source. It has been designed with text supers in mind. The key can be produced from a white on black image or inverted. Alternatively the alpha channel can be used instead of the video to provide the key. When used that way except the key clip and key tolerance controls no longer apply.

A coloured border can also be generated from the key. Border opacity, width and colour are all adjustable. A drop shadow with the same range of adjustments can also be produced, and the position of that shadow can be adjusted.

Note that if using Lightworks title effects as the key source routing will need manual adjustment. In brief, you will need to disconnect the input to any Lightworks title used.

Lumakey with DVEjwrlLumakeyWithDVE.fxKeyMarch 20 2018December 23 2018

This effect is at its simplest just a lumakeyer. However the alpha channel generated by the keyer can also be gated with any alpha component present in the foreground image, allowing you to easily produce combination keys. If that's not enough, it also gives you a simple DVE with cropping ability, which is applied to the foreground before the keyer gets it. Finally, it can also be configured to output the keyer's alpha channel for use with other effects. When in that mode any background is blanked.

For further details see this post.

Masked mixjwrlMaskedMix.fxMixMay 23 2020May 26 2020

This is a variant of Editshare's masked blend that allows the mask to be mixed with the foreground. There are some major differences. The first is that instead of putting the mask input on the bottom layer it is placed on the top. This just appears to make more sense. The next layer is the fill layer, then the bottom is the background. The next difference is that the blend can be enhanced to better handle title effects. Third, when used with title effects drop shadows will be preserved. This has implications if you choose to use coloured drop shadows, because they will be affected by the fill layer.

To circumvent issues like that, versions of this effect dated after 25 May 2020 have added the ability to derive the mask using a colour match process. This also helps where the mask doesn't have at least one of red, green or blue at maximum level. It adds two controls to do this: one for enabling and disabling colour matching, and the other for selecting the colour to match. The simplest way to match the colours is to apply the effect, disable it so that the foreground layer is displayed, and use the eyedropper on the colour wheel to select the colour to match. Once you have the match, enable the effect and continue with the rest of the setup process.

Finally, blending treats the foreground/fill mix as a single layer over the background. While every attempt has been made to match the standard blend modes used in graphic arts software, hue blending has been modified to give a cleaner fill mix. Also, because of the reorganisation and renaming of the mask layers compared to the Lightworks masked blend effect, bypassing the effect will show the foreground layer, and not the fill layer. This was considered to be a reasonable change.

This is a simple keyer that has only six adjustments, seven if you include the opacity control. They are the key colour, key clip, key gain, feathering and the spill reduction controls. Spill can be corrected either using the standard desaturate technique, or the key colour spill can be replaced by the background image either in colour or monochrome. Here is the user interface.

For sophisticated chromakeying, use the Lightworks effect. For simple quick jobs, you might like to try this one - you could be surprised at its ease of use and effectiveness.

This is a general purpose toolkit designed to build simple lower thirds. The screen grab above gives an idea of the categories of tools available. It can optionally be fed with a graphics layer or other external image or effect. It's designed to produce a flat coloured ribbon with two overlaid floating flat colour boxes. They can be used to generate borders, other graphical components, or even be completely hidden. Everything is adjustable, so you're only limited by your imagination.

This is a toolkit designed to build classic ribbon-style lower thirds, although it can also do other styles too. At its simplest it will create an edged, coloured ribbon gradient with an overlaid floating bordered flat colour box. Any component of the lower third can be completely hidden if required and all are fully adjustable. It's a three input effect which uses In1 for an optional logo or other graphical component, In2 for optional text and Bgd as the background layer.

Lower third AjwrlLowerThirdA.fxTextMarch 15 2018December 26 2018

This effect is designed to move a coloured bar on from one edge of the screen then lower it to reveal an alpha text image connected to the overlay input In_1. After a suitable interval, the bar can then be moved up to hide the text again and moved off the edge of screen to clear the effect. Optionally it can also be adjusted so that the text rises or falls out of the bar, and the bar can be set to rise to reveal the text.

There are two different groups of settings for the bar. The idea is that you set up the reference position first along with the length, width and colour, then adjust the bar movement settings. That way you can store a template with your reference bar but are completely unhindered in any keyframing and movement requirements.

To see the effect in action play the MP4 files below.

This lower third does a rippling peel effect over a plain coloured ribbon. The opacity of the ribbon can be shaded both vertically and horizontally, and entering negative values of opacity will cause full transparency to be reached earlier than the full width or height of the ribbon. Try it - you'll quickly see what I mean. The MP4 below shows one example of what can be done.
