2D DVE plus antialiasjwrl, schrauber2dDVEplusAntialias.fxDVEMarch 9 2020November 11 2020

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

If you can use the Lightworks DVE you can use this one. It performs as the standard 2D DVE version does, but with some differences. The first is the obvious one that Fg, Bg and drop shadow alphas are passed to the output. The drop shadow is also slightly different, and now scales along with the foreground. This was felt to be more logical when using the DVE to zoom an image.

Fixed in this version of the 2D DVE is the half texel offset error which can appear as a transparent one pixel boundary between the image and the drop shadow under the right conditions in the Lightworks version. Also fixed is the fact the shadow is calculated from Fg frame boundaries regardless of whether they are opaque or not. Finally, the presence of the drop shadow will not punch a transparent hole in the composite when used with downstream blend and DVE effects as the Lightworks version does.

Added in this version is a means of smoothing the edges of the image, overcoming the aliasing and jitter that can be caused by simple GPU processing of a zoom. You will see its setup in the screen grab below.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Because of the considerably increased GPU load this can add, antialiasing is an optional component which can be disabled if your graphics card chokes on it. The stronger the setting the heavier the GPU load. The "None" setting bypasses all edge blurring, and the default, "Subtle", loads the GPU only slightly more than "None" does.

There is an explanation of the reason for developing this DVE in NOTES ON 2D DVEs. Boring title, interesting read. It wasn't built just to fix antialiassing - in fact that is perhaps the least important part of the reason. But just to whet your appetite, there is an example of a zoom from 0x to 10x scaling with the four different settings in play at 2D_DVE_antialias.mp4. It uses an externally created text graphic as the DVE foreground.

Deco DVEjwrlDecoDVE.fxDVEApril 27 2017November 11 2020

This effect started life as an Art Deco take on the classic DVE effect. It produces two independently adjustable borders around a cropped foreground image and allows the foreground image to be resized and positioned inside the crop window. It overlays adjustable classic Deco "flash lines" inside the border. As well as that, it allows the foreground cropped composite with its borders to be independently scaled and positioned. This means that you no longer need to use two DVE effects to scale and position an image inside a cropped window. Any or both borders and the gap can be scaled to zero, as can the flash lines. Finally, as the cropped composite is zoomed out over the background the user can choose to have a single instance of it on screen or multiple versions.

You will find a full description plus comprehensive instructions here.

DVE with vignettejwrlDVEwithVignette.fxDVEMay 28 2017November 11 2020

This effect is a simple 2D DVE with the ability to apply a circular, square or diamond shaped mask or vignette. The aspect ratio of the mask can be adjusted, so ellipses and rectangles can also be produced. The foreground image can be positioned and resized inside the mask, as you would expect with a DVE. However the mask can then be repositioned, taking the foreground image with it. This means that once you have your vignette and insert set up you can freely move the vignette around on the screen without having to go back and fix your DVE.

The edges of the mask can be bordered with a bicolour shaded surround. There is also a drop shadow available, and the border and shadow can be feathered. Drop shadow and border feathering are independently adjustable.

Framed DVEjwrlFramedDVE.fxDVENovember 14 2018November 11 2020

This is a combination of two 2D DVEs designed to provide a drop shadow and vignette effect while adding a textured border from a third video source. Because of the way that the DVEs are created and applied they have exactly the same quality impact on the final result as a single DVE would. The main DVE adjusts the foreground, crop, frame and drop shadow. When the border is added it can be bevelled, and the bevel can be feathered, as can the drop shadow. The second very simple DVE adjusts the size and position of the foreground inside the frame.

This has some of the same functions as the 3D DVE, but the settings menu does not look as complex as that effect. It trades that for simple functionality, and adds the ability to mirror or duplicate the image as you zoom out. If you only need rotation and zoom, then you only need this effect. The rotation axis is automatically adjusted in the same way as the 3D DVE does.

Triple DVEjwrlTripleDVE.fxDVEJune 6 2017November 11 2020

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This is three 2D DVE effects in one package. Of the first two, DVE 1 adjusts the foreground layer and DVE 2 adjusts the background one. The foreground can be cropped with square or rounded corners and can also be given a bi-colour border. Both the edges and borders can be feathered, and a drop shadow is also provided. The drop shadow has its own softness adjustment. Here's what you can expect to see on screen.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

DVE 3 takes the cropped, bordered output of DVE 1 as its input. This means that you can scale the background and foreground independently, then the adjust position and size of the cropped foreground, along with any masking, borders or what have you. Because of the way that the DVEs are created and applied they have exactly the same quality impact on the final result as a single DVE would.

Zoom in, simple, 2021schrauberZoomInSimple2021.fxDVEJanuary 21 2021January 21 2021

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This is a zoom effect that replaces schrauber's earlier effect, Zoom out/in. It is designed to be compatible with the resolution independence now in the effect chain, as well as adding some additional features.

First, it now has three scaling modes, as shown in the screen grab below.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

The "Standard" mode is similar to the Lightworks 2D DVD in operation. The two "zoom center" modes keep the image edges in focus during dynamic zooming. In either of these modes you should fine-tune the position at maximum zoom to ensure the best centering when zooming in.

The next new feature is a choice of two backgrounds, opaque or transparent black. In the transparent mode, the frame edge interpolation is only applied to the alpha value. This is done to minimise artefacts when other effects replace the transparency. However this means that the edges may have visible aliasing if it isn't used with other effects so this mode should only be used if you really need transparency.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

The "Expand" input ensures that the full sequence aspect ratio can be used when zooming in. Nothing need be connected to it for normal use. It is definitely not a background, and anything connected to it will not be seen. However you can use it to increase the resolution in the effect pipeline far above the original resolution and above the sequence resolution by connecting an image with higher resolution to this input. Do not use the Image effect for this purpose, because that will just give you the sequence resolution. This feature can be useful with some minimization effects.

Colour film ageingjwrlColourFilmAgeing.fxColourFebruary 5 2017November 12 2020

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Designed as an all-in-one effect to emulate colour film ageing, this effect allows you to have a controllable amount of sprocket wear and tear, chemistry failure, physical damage and grain to your pristine images. The scratches shown in the image above are perhaps a little heavy handed, but that was done so that they would survive the screen grab size reduction. The effect itself can be as subtle as you like.

This effect simulates the old two-colour Duotone film colour process. It makes no claim as to accuracy. It is simply a filter that gives a result that subjectively looks similar to Duotone prints. Filter saturation is adjustable to simulate dye fading.

This is an effect that simulates exposure adjustment using a Cineon profile. It was started by user abelmilanes as FilmFx.fx in 2011 but was never completed. User jwrl did some clean up to get it working. Both master exposure and the individual red/cyan, green/magenta and blue/yellow exposures can be adjusted.

Film labjwrlFilmLab.fxColourJuly 27 2020November 12 2020

Based on a Virtualdub shader, this applies a range of tweaks to simulate the look of various colour film laboratory operations. While similar to the older Film Fx (now withdrawn), it differs in several important ways. The first and most important difference is that the previous effect suffered from range overflow. This could result in highlights becoming grey, and colours suffering arbitrary shifts of both hue and saturation. This effect corrects that.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

The next and most obvious difference is in the settings. In some case the name of those settings and occasionally even the range differs. The direction of action of Saturation has changed to be more logical. The Strength setting has been replaced by Amount for consistency with standard Lightworks effects. The Amount settings range from 0% to 100%, where 0% gives the unmodified video input. The older effect did not allow Strength reduction to do that. Contrast between 50% and 100% covers the same range that the older effect did. However it has had another 50% added, meaning that you can now increase contrast to 150%.

To assist users of that older effect, here is a table of the changes to the parameters.

Filmic lookjwrlFilmLook.fxColourApril 19 2018November 12 2020

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Based on the earlier FilmicLook.fx, this effect simulates a filmic curve with exposure adjustment and controllable halation and vibrance. In this version there is a new exposure setting, so there are now eight parameters. The order of the parameters has been changed from the earlier version allowing two logical groups to be formed as well as the non-grouped range and amount settings.

  • Video range - allows the adjustment range to be set to BT.709 or full gamut.
  • Amount - mixes the final modified image with the original.
  • Exposure - allows a plus or minus one stop exposure correction.
  • S curve - adjusts the amount of S-curve correction applied.
  • Halation - mimics the back scatter found with older types of film stock. Also useful to provide highlight burnout.
  • Colour temp - swings colour temperature between lower (red) and higher (blue).
  • Saturation - increases or reduces master saturation. Adjustment range is from black and white to double the saturation of the original image.
  • Vibrance - operates on midtone saturation levels and applies a selective increase.

Exposure is adjusted before range limiting because we need the exposure fed to the main effect to be correct, and this parameter is meant as a correction adjustment. For the same reason colour temperature is also adjusted ahead of the range limit. The sense of that setting has been swapped so that the higher the colour temperature and the bluer the image the more positive the control now is. There's no change in luminance as the colour temperature is adjusted.

Both vibrance and halation are adjusted logarithmically. By doing this we get a more natural feel to the adjustment. The halation generation technique has been slightly altered from that used in the earlier effect for a result that more closely resembles the look of film. Vibrance is very similar to the sort of effect you get with the Photoshop vibrance filter - thanks gr00by for the algorithm.
