MASKS AND VIGNETTES

New users should read through this post. It will tell you how to install any of these effects.

DVE with vignetteDVECrop PresetsDVE_vignette.fxjwrlDVE_vignette.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This effect is a simple 2D DVE with the ability to apply a circular, square or diamond shaped mask or vignette. The aspect ratio of the mask can be adjusted, so ellipses and rectangles can also be produced. The foreground image can be positioned and resized inside the mask, as you would expect with a DVE. However the mask can then be repositioned, taking the foreground image with it. This means that once you have your vignette and insert set up you can freely move the vignette around on the screen without having to go back and fix your DVE.

The edges of the mask can be bordered with a bicolour shaded surround. There is also a drop shadow available, and the border and shadow can be feathered. Drop shadow and border feathering are independently adjustable.

Octagonal vignetteDVECrop PresetsOctagonal_Vignette.fxjwrlOctagonal_Vignette.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This eight sided vignette is also a crop and mask tool. The vignette may be soft-edged and/or bordered, can generate its own coloured background, or composite the foreground image into a background video layer. It's made up of the standard top, bottom, left and right crops, plus an additional four diagonal crops. The angles of the four square crops can be adjusted ±45°. The four diagonals default to ±45°, but each can be adjusted from approximately 5° to 85°. After the mask has been set up the size and position can be adjusted, and rotation may be adjusted by ±180°.

It isn't just limited to generating eight sided masks - see the images below for representative samples. But note: it cannot be used to generate concave masks. For that you would need khaver's Polymask effects (below).

The Polymask group of effects range from 3 sided to 16 sided masks. They can have a background colour enabled, can be keyframed, and have variable edge softness. The image is an example of a polymask being used to clean up a blue screen shot. They are an extremely powerful way of generating custom masks.

Note: the zip file contains both compatible and legacy Windows versions of Poly14.fx and Poly16.fx. The legacy Windows versions should be used with Windows' Lightworks installations earlier than version 14.5. All other PolyMasks will compile on all platforms and operating systems.

This effect is designed to produce a highlighted spotlight effect on the source video. The spot can be scaled, have its aspect ratio adjusted, and rotated through plus or minus 90 degrees. The edge of the effect can also be feathered.

Foreground and background exposure can be adjusted, as can saturation and vibrance. The background can also be slightly blurred to give a soft focus effect, and the foreground and background can be individually tinted.

MOTION

New users should read through this post. It will tell you how to install any of these effects.

EffectCategorySubcategoryFilenameAuthorDownload
Camera ShakeStylizeMotionCameraShake.fxkhaverCamera_shake.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

The camera shake effect uses luminance variations in a clip to add motion horizontally, vertically and/or rotationally. That clip can be either the source track or another video layer, and that second video layer may contain motion content or be a still frame. As with most powerful effects, it does require some setup. What follows is a brief explanation.

Choose the motion source track and check the "Show motion track" box. This will display that video in the viewer overlaid with red, green and blue lines and three associated coloured ovals. Playing through the clip will cause each oval to move from one end of its line to the other, corresponding to the play head position. The red line gives the area to be used to generate horizontal motion, the green the vertical, and the blue, rotation.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Adjust the start and end points of each line so that they cover a good range of dark and light areas as the clip plays. This can be done with either the sliders or the mouse. Once these are set to your satisfaction uncheck the "Show motion track" box. Now simply adjust the bias and strength for the required amount of horizontal, vertical and rotational movement. The zoom, rotation and pan sliders can be used for additional trimming if desired, and each motion may be independently smoothed and/or have its direction of action reversed.

New strobeStylizeUser EffectsNewStrobe.fxjwrlNewStrobe.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Like khaver's Strobe (see below), this is a two-input effect which switches rapidly between two video layers. Unlike that effect, in version 14.5 of LW and up the switch rate can be set accurately in frames. If you don't have a newer version of Lightworks it will still compile, but you will get the second interface shown above and it will work in the same way as khaver's effect.

Random switchStylizeMotionRandomSwitch.fxjwrlRandomSwitch.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This effect performs a pseudo random switch between two inputs. While it can compile and run under Lightworks version 14.0, it has much better stability of control when compiled and run under version 14.5. The routing shown above is an example of it being used to switch between a cropped and an uncropped foreground into a DVE effect.

StrobeStylizeUser EffectsStrobe.fxkhaverStrobe.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Strobe is a two-input effect which switches rapidly between two video layers. The switch rate is dependent on the length of the clip. This is a characteristic of Lightworks effects subsystem and isn't a fault of this effect. There should be enough adjustment range of strobe spacing to allow any reasonable clip size to be used, but if you need more range break the clip into sections and repeat the effect.

NOISE AND GRAIN

EffectCategorySubcategoryFilenameAuthorDownload
Film GrainStylizeGrain and NoiseFilmGrain.fxkhaverFilm_grain.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

The image is a 50% enlarged version of a 1:1 crop of a 1920x1080 frame with the grain size and strength bumped up a bit so you can see it more clearly. It's "film" grain applied to luminance only. The effect adds grain to an image either as a rather clumpy film-style grain or as just random noise. You have the choice to apply the grain to just the luminance, just the chroma, luminance and chroma, or the RGB channels.

Grain(Variable)StylizeGrain and NoiseVariGrain.fxkhaverVari_grain.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This effect is an extended flexible means of adding grain to your image. With this effect as well as adjusting the intensity you can also adjust the size and softness of the grain. If that wasn't enough you can also apply the grain just to the alpha channel and adjust the transparency of the alpha grain. This lets you do some grain blending effects with other video or images on the video track below it.

Variable Film GrainStylizeGrain and NoiseVariFilmGrain.fxkhaverVariFilmGrain.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This effect is based on khaver's earlier Grain(Variable) effect (above). This version rolls-off the strength of the grain as the luminance values in the image approach either black or white, much like real film does. The controls are:

  • STRENGTH: controls the amount of grain added.
  • SIZE: controls the size of the grain.
  • DISTRIBUTION: controls the space between grains.
  • ROLL-OFF BIAS: contols the roll-off curve between pure white and pure black.
  • GRAIN BLUR: adds blur to the grain.
  • SHOW GRAIN: lets you see just the grain.
  • ALPHA GRAIN ONLY: replaces the source alpha channel with the grain, passing the RGB channels from the source image through untouched.
  • ALPHA ADJUSTMENT: tweaks the alpha channel grain.

CRT TV screenStylizeSimulationCRTscreen.fxjwrlCRTscreen.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This effect simulates a close-up look at an analogue colour TV screen. The three most common options are available, identified as type 1, type 2 and type 3 in this effect, and the scale of the line pattern can be adjusted in discrete steps. There is no attempt to emulate the horizontal scan lines - when those tubes were at their height vertical dither was used to hide the scan lines in any case. No attempt has been made to emulate a dot matrix shadow mask tube either, because in early tests we found too much luminance loss for the effect to be of great use. That's pretty much why all the manufacturers stopped making the real tube too.

The glow/halation effect is a simple blur, slightly modified to give a reasonable simulation of the burnout that could be obtained by overdriving a CRT of that class.

This effect uses three possible profiles. One partially inverts red, one partially inverts blue, and the third takes the red channel of an image and partially subtracts blue and green channels from it. Highlights are then burned out, gamma is adjusted and video noise added. Finally the image is softened and coloured green. Because this type of effect will always be subjective, highlight burnout, gamma, grain, softness and green saturation are all adjustable.

This allows you to use artwork to apply a texture to any video source. The texture will displace the image as well as add highlights to it, so you will get a strong, bump-mapped 3D effect. The texture must be on a video layer above the one you wish to apply it to - at the moment there is no means to directly access an external file in this effect. There is a separate zip with the 1080 version of a stucco texture for you to experiment with at Stucco_1080.zip. If you want to work with higher resolutions than that it will scale.

Coloured tilesMixUser EffectsDx_ColourTile.fxjwrlDx_ColourTile.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This effect obliterates the outgoing image with a mosaic pattern of highly coloured tiles that progressively fill the screen to halfway through the effect. It then removes the tiles progressively to show the incoming image. The tile build and "un-build" are from the brightest to the darkest sections of a dissolve between the two images and back again. This makes the linearity of this effect highly dependant on the black/white balance between the two images used. If this is important to you, you can adjust it by adding intermediate keyframes within the transition.

While there may not appear to be much difference between this and Dx_Mosaic below, there is in fact a substantial visual difference between the two. Play the MP4s of both and see.

Dissolve through ColourMixUser EffectsDx_Colour.fxjwrlDx_Colour.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This effect dissolves through a user-selected colour field from one clip to another. The colour percentage can be adjusted from 0% when the effect perform as a standard dissolve, to 100% which fades to the colour field then to the second video stream. Values between 100% and 0% will make the colour more or less opaque, giving quite subtle colour blends through the transition.

Transition centring can also be adjusted. Thanks khaver for the idea (see his dissolveX, below), although this algorithm and implementation is entirely new. It allows the dissolve to behave as before, to cut to the colour then fade out, or fade into the colour then cut off. As part of that implementation, it also adds the ability to adjust the linearity of the transition to colour.

The colour field can be set up to be a single flat colour or a wide range of gradients. In the gradients that blend to the centre, the centre point is also fully adjustable. Asymmetrical colour transitions can be created by keyframing the effect centre, opacity, transition curve, gradient centre and colour values. The user interface is shown below.

Dissolve through flat ColourMixUser EffectsDx_ColourFlat.fxjwrlDx_ColourFlat.zip

This is a modified version of "Dissolve through colour" which is very much simpler to use than that earlier effect. Of course, with simplicity comes some reduction in flexibility. It doesn't do variable transparency, it only does flat colour rather than all of the gradients available with the earlier effect, and it isn't possible to vary the curve used unless you keyframe it.

Apply it as you would a dissolve, adjust the percentage of the dissolve that you want to stay at 100% colour and set the colour as you wish. It defaults to white with a colour duration of 10% of the total effect duration.

This expanded dissolve allows optional blend modes to be applied during the transition by adding a drop down menu to select different dissolve methods. A timing slider has also been added that adjusts where the 50% mix point happens in the dissolve (slider to the left and the 50% mix point happens before the mid-point of the dissolve, slider to the right and it happens after the mid-point), a layer swap option (some dissolve methods are affected by which layer is on top or bottom), and a bypass option.

These two effects fade any video to which they're applied up from black or down to black. Strictly speaking they aren't dissolves at all, since they each require one input only. That single input can be a composite of multiple video and effects layers, allowing you to fade in and out really complicated timelines.

They are applied in the same way as you would apply a title effect, i.e., by marking the region that the fade in or out is to occupy. Once you apply either effect 99 times out of 100 you will not have to touch your routing. It really is that simple. The screen grab above shows the way the effect appears in the timeline, and you can play FadeUpDown.mp4 to see it in action.

FlareTran is a transition that dissolves through an over-exposure style flare. As seen in the screen grab, amongst other things it can be used to simulate the burn out effect that happens when a film camera stops. It will be added to the Mixes category and the Transitions right-click and F8 panel as FlareTran.

To use, add the flare transition like you would a dissolve and bring up the settings panel. Move the on-screen target to a bright spot in the first clip (you can change this to use a spot in the second clip by checking the "Swap target track" box). Use the Strength and Stretch sliders to adjust so that near the middle of the transition you get a very bright flare. That will be the frame at which the transition will change from the first clip to the second clip. If it isn't exactly at 50% on the Progress slider, change the Timing slider to match the point on the Progress slider at which it occurs.

You can also keyframe the location of the flare target, and the strength and stretch values.

This cute transition effect "flies" the image off to reveal the new image. The process is divided into 2 phases in order to always ensure a clean transition at different effect positions. The first phase transforms the outgoing image into the centre of the frame as a butterfly shape. In this part of the transition the position is fixed. The second part is the actual flight phase. Adjustment of the final destination is possible, but the default is a destination outside of the screen. The available parameters are shown below.

This effect obliterates the outgoing image with a mosaic pattern that progressively fills the screen to halfway through the effect. It then removes the mosaic progressively to show the incoming image. The mosaic build and the incoming reveal are both from the darkest to the brightest sections of a 50 percent mix of the two images, making the progression in and out reasonably logical.

The linearity is highly dependant on the black/white balance between the two images used. If this is important to you, you should adjust it by adding intermediate keyframes within the transition.

This is an "S" dissolve, and is essentially the same as Editshare's "Mix", with either a trigonometric or a quadratic S curve applied to the "Amount" parameter. If you need to you can vary the linearity of the curve from -100% (inverse curvature) through 0% (linear) to 100% (full curvature). The midpoint curve setting will give you a linear transition just like a standard dissolve.

If you manually enter values for the curve outside the 0-100% range you can get even more extreme curves than those shown. You can even get midpoint inversion by typing in values greater than -100%, i.e., the effect will fade in then start to fade out, then fade in to completion.

This is a difference key controlling a Star Trek-like transporter-style transition. It is definitely not intended to be a copy of any of the Star Trek versions of that effect. At most it should be regarded as an interpretation of the idea behind it. Unlike Transporter I or Transporter II, this is set up to be used in the same way as a dissolve.

The transition is quite complex in what it does, but simple to set up. All that you need is two locked off shots, the second with the person/thing you wish to materialise added. The key is only ever used to control the area that the sparkles/stars occupy. During the first part of the transition's progress the sparkles or stars build, then hold for the middle section. They then decay to zero. Under that, after the first 30% of the transition the new shot starts a linear fade in, reaching full value at 70% of the transition progress.

TRANSITIONS B

The effects here have been split in two: there are simple transitions, immediately below, then further down you'll find composite transitions. Those have been designed to provide a simple means of adding push, squeeze, and other DVE-based transitions between two keyed clips and move them along with their backgrounds.

New users should read through this post. It will tell you how to install any of these effects. If you want to see what the effect actually does, click on the MP4 link attached to each entry.

In most cases these effects aren't suitable for adding transitions to titles, graphics and other sources with alpha channels. You'll find versions of any of them that can be used for that purpose in the ALPHA TRANSITIONS section.

REMOTE CONTROL

New users should read through this post. It will tell you how to install any of these effects.

Because of the density of the text in the table the category "User" isn't shown here, just the subcategory "Remote Control". Instructions on the settings and what they mean can be found in SettingDisplayUnit__20170225.zip. Because any screen grab of these effects would be reasonably meaningless, few have been supplied. It is up to you how you use them, and configuration is very flexible.

With the imminent release of version 14.5 different GPU precision settings will now be now available. Schrauber advises that using 16-bit and 32-bit floating point modes can improve the performance of effects that require precise angle and rotation settings. However at this stage 16-bit floating point isn't recommended for remote control effects. It can result in unpredictable angle changes. The Settings Display Unit will also not work with 16-bit floating point mode, so for the moment that mode should be avoided.

This is the master controller for the entire remote control user effects subsystem. It generates up to five separate remote control channels on the one output. By itself it does very little, but when used with the appropriate effects it is a very powerful tool. The desired channel to be used is selected in the custom remote-controllable effect.

All channels can be controlled simultaneously by means of a "Master" slider. As with all adjustable controls, here keyframing can be used. In turn, that Master can itself be remote controlled. The "Multiply", parameter allows the master signal to amplify, attenuate or invert the individual control channels. LOWER THIRDS

New users should read through this post. It will tell you how to install any of these effects.

This collection of effects is designed to support Lightworks' own lower thirds, not replace them. Unlike the Lightworks versions these are single effects, not a pre-packaged group of effects. Some of the effects here are dynamic, in that they are designed to reveal the text. Some are just adjustable preset effects, and others are toolboxes designed for maximum flexibility.

They all support external text input so that you can use externally generated graphics as well as Lightworks' own title effect. If using a Lightworks title as an input to the effect the title effect's input must be disconnected and the text type must be set to "Lightworks title effect". Here's the routing and settings for the two variant uses of a lower third effect.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Transparency can be set in most of the effects by adjusting the alpha values of the colour parameters. Where this isn't possible the transparency can be set by faders in the effect.

This effect is designed to move a coloured bar on from one edge of the screen then lower it to reveal an alpha text image connected to the overlay input In_1. After a suitable interval, the bar can then be moved up to hide the text again and moved off the edge of screen to clear the effect. Optionally it can also be adjusted so that the text rises or falls out of the bar, and the bar can be set to rise to reveal the text.

There are two different groups of settings for the bar. The idea is that you set up the reference position first along with the length, width and colour, then adjust the bar movement settings. That way you can store a template with your reference bar but are completely unhindered in any keyframing and movement requirements.

This lower third does a rippling peel effect over a plain coloured ribbon. This lower third is a spin off (pun intended) of "Lower third E" (above). This does a twist of a text overlay over a standard ribbon with adjustable opacity. The direction of the twist can be set to wipe on or wipe off. "Wipe on" gives a left to right transition, and "Wipe off" gives a right to left transition. As a result when setting the transition range in "Wipe off" it's necessary to set the transition to zero. The MP4 below shows one example of it in action.

This is a toolkit designed to build classic ribbon-style lower thirds, although it can also do other styles too. At its simplest it will create an edged, coloured ribbon gradient with an overlaid floating bordered flat colour box. Any component of the lower third can be completely hidden if required and all are fully adjustable. It's a three input effect which uses In1 for an optional logo or other graphical component, In2 for optional text and Bgd as the background layer.

WIPE PATTERNS

The Lightworks wipe effect supports user designed wipe patterns, so we've provided a set of wipe packs for you to download. You will find details on how to manage wipe patterns at the bottom of this page.

This is my starter pack of wipe effects. All patterns in this and the next three packs are based on variants of a circle theme. The thumbnails above show the actual pattern on the top line, and below that the effect it has part way through a wipe from black to white. A soft border transitioning from light blue to pink was used to emphasize the wipe effect.

You can preview the four wipes with actual footage in the attached MP4 file.

USING CUSTOM WIPE PATTERNS
Creating user wipe patterns is a simple matter of setting up a greyscale gradient that follows the path that you want the wipe to take. That is the basis of each of the pattern packs supplied here. To get started simply download them and save them to a convenient place on your drive. You can use them immediately as-is, although you might not get exactly the effect that you see in the thumbnails if you do.

The file format of each JPEG is 2K by 2K. Lightworks will scale them to fit the screen resolution, so it's usually preferable to crop or scale them yourself to get the expected result. This can easily be done in Photoshop or any similar art package, and in fact is the technique used to produce the thumbnails above. Once you have the file in the format that you need, save it then select "Pattern > User" in your wipe settings and click on the "Create wipe from image.." button. See the screen grab below to get an idea of what you should see.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Navigate to where you have saved your modified wipe pattern and select the one that you need. Once the pattern is loaded you will be able to use it in exactly the same way as any other wipe. You will also find that if you want to get a feel for what the effect does, hovering your mouse pointer over its thumbnail in the wipe settings will show you an animated version.

Because these have been supplied as square images you have a fair degree of flexibility in how you choose to edit them. For example, here's what can happen if you take jwrl_C_03, rotate it through 90 degrees, cut it in half, stretch it to fit inside a 1920x1080 frame then blur it a little. You really are limited by your own creativity with these patterns.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

If you decide that you don't need a particular pattern any more, to remove it you must first exit Lightworks. Navigate to C:\Users\Public\Documents\Lightworks\Effect Templates\Wipes (Windows), /usr/share/lightworks/Effect Templates/Wipes (Linux) or
/User/USER ACCOUNT/Lightworks/Effect Templates/Wipes (Mac). In that folder you will find a series of Targa (.TGA) files. These are your user wipes. Select any that you wish to remove and trash them. That's it.

USING COMPOSITE TRANSITIONS.

This explanation is based on an example of using "Composite split" to squeeze one key with its associated background off as another key and background is expanded on. The illustrations are done using folded effects, but they will also work if your effects are unfolded.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

To set this up the keys or other composite effects must initially be overlapped to allow for the transition. The timeline shown below demonstrates what I mean. To add the transition place a mark at one end of the overlap and park at the other. You then just add the effect using "Mix > User Effects > Composite squeeze". All routing will be taken care of for you automatically.

Here you can see in order the effect settings, the routing that you will get, and the timeline configuration. Note that the connection to V2 is just a dummy, and does absolutely nothing except ensure that the automatic routing is handled correctly. The example here was made with the original effects folded into the timeline, but that isn't important. What will happen is your transition will be added to its own effects layer regardless of whether the other effects are folded or not.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

There is an alternative technique, in which the uppermost video track has a cut added at the overlap boundaries. If your effects are unfolded the cut must be in the uppermost FX track instead. This is what you will see if using that technique.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

If you have the order of effects reversed you can address that by using a simple check box.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

If you need to squeeze a keyed image over a non-keyed one the technique is exactly the same, as it is with blended images or any other two layer composite images.

Return to TRANSITIONS B.

USING THE ROUTING PANEL TO DELETE EFFECTS

Users should really try to understand how routing works when dealing with effects. It's the hidden power of the effects system.

For example, if you go to the routing display you will be able to right click on any effect(s) you wish to remove and delete them from there. By doing it that way you can immediately see any unexpected dependencies which may cause you to delete more than you wish.

In another thread gr00by gave this example. The title effect in the screen grab has been right clicked on.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

If you now go ahead and remove the title effect in this example, Lightworks cannot automatically restore the disconnected connection. It can't know what you intended.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

In the routing panel you will now clearly see that the blend effect is still present, but its output has been disconnected. Both that and the corresponding video track, V2, are now without function. If you had done this from the timeline it would have seemed that several effects and a video track had been removed, although only one effect had gone in actuality. Needless to say, this can lead to great confusion.

In the routing panel you will immediately see that you need to reconnect the effects manually. The problem can be solved as soon as it appears.

Another case:

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

If you remove the blend effect instead, the video track V2 will disappear. The other effects are available, but without any video connected to the title the effect will have a mainly black background.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

There are several ways that this can be corrected. If you also remove the other 2 effects, the video from V2 will automatically connect. That probably won't be what you intended. A better way to do this if you only want to remove that one effect is to first undo the action that caused the disaster. After all, that's what undo is for. Then break the connection between the blend and the title and connect V2 to the title instead. Finally delete the blend effect.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Thank you gr00by for the screen grabs.
