This forum thread is designed to help you find a particular effect. If this is your first time here it is important that you read through this additional post in its entirety. There is information there that you need to know. There is also important information there about maintaining your effects library.

This is a link to a zip file containing an up to date copy of the complete effects library. There is also a link to the individual effects in the GitHub repository if that suits your needs better.

If you download the master zip file you should not install the whole contents of it at once. If you do Lightworks startup times may become extremely slow. This is a library and should be treated as such – you don't take home all the books in your local library at once either.

ALPHA AND BLENDS: Process alpha channels and set up blend modes.

ALPHA TRANSITIONS: are effects designed to apply transitions to titles without affecting backgrounds.

ART EFFECTS: Greyscale, tiling and tonal effects.

AUDIO EFFECTS: Lightworks-supplied audio effects.

BLURS AND SHARPENS: Predominantly blurs, not many sharpens.

BROADCAST TOOLS: This includes analysis, test signal and safe area generation.

CLEANUP AND REPAIR: Repair tools for video.

COLOUR GRADING: are tools to either grade or assist in grading.

DISTORTIONS: Ripples, twists, and warps.

DVE, REPOSITION AND CROP: Flips, cropping and perspective.

FILMSTOCK EFFECTS: Bleach bypass, dye fades, etc.

FILTERS: Simulate camera filtration and "looks".

KEYING: Green/blue screen, chroma key, luminance key and edge effects.

LOWER THIRDS: Animated lower thirds and tools to build your own.

MASKS AND VIGNETTES: Pretty self explanatory, it also includes cropping effects.

MOTION: These effects add movement to your image.

NOISE AND GRAIN: Add or remove noise and grain.

PATTERN AND BACKGROUND GENERATORS: Create background patterns.

REMOTE CONTROL: A specialised category of effects that use external controllers to adjust them.

SIMULATION: Creates simulations of real-world effects.

SPECIAL FX: Anything that doesn't fit anywhere else, really.

TEXT AND TITLES: Titles and lower thirds.

TEXTURISERS: Add texture, dot patterns or similar filters.

TRANSITIONS A: Dissolves, spins, blurs, and other interesting mixes.

TRANSITIONS B: Wipes, splits, squeezes, and the more esoteric transitions.

WIPE PATTERNS: contains patterns for use in the Lightworks wipe effect.

You will also find all of the user effects at User Effects files (Post #1 has them all). That thread starts with a linear list of effects in (roughly) the order posted. It's useful for browsing.

If you want to develop your own effects, Documentation for developing Lightworks effects should help.

There's also useful information in USING THE ROUTING PANEL TO DELETE EFFECTS. It's well worth a look.

Any suggestions about category or classification changes will be very gratefully accepted.

INSTALLATION

As much as possible the effects that you find here are multi-platform. That is, regardless of whether you are running Lightworks on Linux, Mac or Windows you should be able to use exactly the same effect. Where this isn't possible alternative versions will be provided, along with an accompanying explanation. This doesn't mean that the software is in any way flawed, just that you will need to use the appropriate version for your operating system. No effect that can only be be run on one platform will ever appear here.

You will also notice that some effects don't appear here that do appear in the main user effects forum. That may not be because they don't meet the criterion of compatibility, but that Lightworks either provides the effect, or that the effect has in some way been superseded by later work.

If you do want to try any effect, here are the simple steps needed to install effects in Lightworks. Users of versions of Lightworks earlier than version 14 should read the special section below dedicated to their needs.

  1. Download your chosen effect or the master library ZIP and open it.
  2. Copy the FX file(s) that you need to your computer.
  3. Launch Lightworks and open a project.
  4. Press the F9 key to launch the effects browser. Make sure that the "+" tab is selected.
  5. Right-click on the word "Category" and select "Create template from FX file".
  6. In the top left of the window that appears click on "Places".
  7. Navigate to the folder in which you stored the FX file and select it.
  8. Click Ok. The effect will be copied, compiled and a screen will appear with details

  • Lightworks does not overwrite existing effects but simply adds new ones to the list, even if they have the same name as a currently installed effect. If you want to replace a current user effect you need to delete it first then add the new effect. In the effects panel, right-click the effect and select "Delete..". You will be asked whether you want to permanently delete the effect. Say yes, then install your new version. You cannot delete Lightworks supplied effects in this way.

_____________________________________________

Using Effects.

Most effects are pretty self-explanatory, and are usually logical and simple to use. When you get unexpected results the first thing to check is the effect's settings and the video routing. Both are accessible by right-clicking on the timeline and from the drop down menu that appears selecting either Effects > Settings.. or Effects > Video routing.. Lightworks uses node-based effects, and if you're uncertain what this means you should check the Lightworks Effects tutorial. The concepts are simple and take very little time to understand.

If you are using the special category of effects designed for working with titles (Alpha transitions) there is an additional set of instructions on using them that you will find immediately below this one. Because they have to deal with additional complexity that standard dissolves and wipes don't there is a slightly different workflow involved, so it will pay you to check. They aren't harder, just different.
_____________________________________________

Effects maintenance.

There isn't a lot to do to maintain your effects library, but there are one or two things to bear in mind. First, don't just dump every available effect into your effects folder. Even if you haven't installed them, Lightworks will compile every effect that it finds in the effects templates folder every time that it starts up. For that reason you should only install the effects that you need.

This behaviour also has implications for the deletion process. If you delete an effect you should also move that effect out of C:\Users\Public\Documents\Lightworks\Effect Templates on Windows, /usr/share/lightworks/effect templates on Linux, or /User/USER ACCOUNT/Lightworks/Effect Templates on Mac. If you don't do that it will continue to compile whenever you restart Lightworks.

_____________________________________________

Compiler warnings.

If you get red on-screen error messages when trying to install a new effect, for some reason Lightworks has been unable to compile it. Make a note of the error message and the name of the effect that you have attempted to compile and post the details here, along with details of your operating system and display card.

_____________________________________________

Older Lightworks installation process.

Version 12.6 users and earlier should do the following:

  1. Download your chosen effect or the master library ZIP and copy the FX file that you need to your computer.
  2. Launch Lightworks, open a project, and then open the "Add Effects" panel
  3. Click the cog icon (upper-right) and click "Create template from FX file"
  4. In the top left of the window that appears click on "Places" and navigate to the folder in which you stored the FX file.
  5. Select it and then click Ok
  6. The effect will be copied, compiled and a screen will appear with details

In Lightworks versions prior to 12.6 you may see in the error logfile the message "shader compiler error 0". This is a warning only, and relates to the shader language used for the effects library and it's implementation of certain functions on some operating systems. It can be safely ignored.
_____________________________________________

Because this will always be a work in progress, from time to time some effects may not compile on certain operating systems. Please tell us if you find any issues. And if you have an effect to add, please add it to khaver's original thread. That is constantly monitored, and if the effect is appropriate it will be picked up and added here.

SETTING UP ALPHA TRANSITIONS

First, new users who have never installed a Lightworks effect before should read through the post above this. It will tell you how to install any effect that you find here.

The alpha transition effects are a special class of effect designed to circumvent the inability of a transition to be applied to titles in Lightworks without affecting the background. Using them is just a little more complex than using a standard transition. This will guide you through the process, assuming no previous knowledge. For the purposes of this demonstration we will use Ax_Sine.fx – an alpha sine mix effect. The screen grab shows a title effect with the cursor parked where we want the sine mix to end.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Press the “c” key to force a cut in the effect at that point. Note that all other layers are disabled, and that only the effect track that we wish to apply the effect to is active. You don't have to be terribly precise at this stage, because you can always trim the position later. Once you have made your cut, if everything has been done correctly, the screen grab shows what you should have. If yours doesn't look like this, undo and try again – it's easy to skip a step or miss something when working through things the first time round.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Add the effect to the section of the timeline where you want the transition to be – in this case the start of the title. At this point the timeline should look exactly like the screen grab below. If instead it looks like a dissolve transition, undo it and move your cursor away from the very start of the title – even a single frame away will do. Then add the effect again. While it's possible to set this up if Lightworks believes that it's a transition, it can make the routing messy to deal with.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

You will notice that at the moment the alpha transition does not work as you would have expected it to. It's also changing the background along with the title. Fortunately there is an extremely simple routing change that can be made to fix this. Open the routing panel. You should now see something like the screen grab.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

As you can see from that screen grab the effect can clearly only operate on the combined title and background. You need it to operate on the title alone, so you will need to first remove the input from the title effect before going any further. You should end up with the routing shown in this screen grab.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

In the settings panel there are a few adjustments unique to this class of effect. The first and most important is always right at the top of any Lightworks alpha transition, and corrects for the fact that we are no longer using Lightworks internal compositor to blend the title with the background. This normally defaults to the correct setting as shown. Only if you are using a graphic, image effect or video with transparency would you need to select “Video/External image” instead.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

The other important setting is labelled “Transition” and selects the transition mode. This defaults to fade or wipe in. Only if you were doing a fade or wipe out would you need to change it.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Make any adjustments that you need to your effect. The settings available will vary from transition to transition, so you will need to play a little to find out what they can do for you. The one setting that you shouldn't touch unless you really have to vary the linearity of the transition is the “Amount” setting. That corresponds to the same setting in Lightworks' dissolve effect. You normally wouldn't touch that either.

Previous versions of the alpha effects also supported dissolving between titles. That function has been removed. It was felt that it added complexity both operationally and from the programming perspective, and really didn't contribute much to the effect. That
means that you now need two of them when creating an alpha dissolve. Set up the titles, add the effects, and adjust the routing. The screen grabs show the routing needed and the timeline layout. The process is simpler and much more flexible than with the earlier effects.

Finally, if you're using an image effect, an image key effect or any form of video or graphic super, the process is identical with two important exceptions. You must remove any blend effects used with the transition, and as explained earlier, select “Video/External image”.

Adjustable blendKeyUser EffectsAdjBlend.fxjwrlAdjBlend.zip

This is a quick way of blending when the alpha channel may not quite be as required. The alpha channel may be inverted or scaled, the video may be premultiplied, and transparency and opacity may be adjusted. Unlike the Lightworks blend effect there are no Photoshop-style blending modes. This doesn't have the range of adjustments that Alpha adjust provides, nor does it provide the feathering of Alpha feather. It's simply designed for when you just need a quick fix.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

The "Opacity" control allows you to fade the foreground in and out. Premultiply uses the alpha channel to drop the transparent section of the image to black, which can help to give a cleaner key. Transparency fades the background in and out, and alpha linearity is a catch-all control that can help bed the foreground into the background. Invert alpha is self-explanatory.

The Alpha Feather effect was created to help bed an externally generated graphic with alpha channel into an existing background after it was noticed that the standard Lightworks Blend/In Front effect can give foreground images sharp, slightly aliased edges. This new effect is intended to be used in place of that effect. It will allow you to slightly feather the edges of the foreground image with the background image by blurring both in the blend region. The blurring controls allow you to change the blur radius and threshold so if your alpha channel matte does have some gradients in it you can exclude those areas from blurring. The blurring is also a true gaussian blur, so it should give high quality results.

There is a detailed description by khaver of this powerful effect and how to use it here. It is well worth reading.

This effect was created to enable the user to add a border and/or drop shadow to any image with an alpha channel. Border and shadow colours are independently adjustable, and two border generation modes are provided. Both can be anti-aliased or not as desired. Normally used to composite the result into a background image, it can also export all transparency, shadow and border data for use with other effects. The example above uses a black text graphic, this effect, then a DVE to scale and rotate the result.

Note that if used with a Lightworks title effect, routing will need manual adjustment. See "Extrusion matte" below for details.

Drop shadow plus is similar to the previous effect, with the addition of a comprehensive range of blend modes. The blends can be applied to just the drop shadow, the border and drop shadow together, or foreground, border and drop shadow combined. The example above shows a cyan border at its thickest setting and a drop shadow set to dark blue. The blend mode applied to both is hard light with the border set to 100% opacity and the drop shadow at 50%. The foreground has no blend applied to it, and has thus defaulted to normal alpha overlay.

Note that if used with a Lightworks title effect, routing will need manual adjustment. See "Extrusion matte" below for details.

Enhanced blendMixCustomBlendX.fxjwrlBlendX.zip

This is a variant of the Lightworks blend effect with the option to boost the alpha channel (transparency) to match the blending used by Lightworks title effects. It can help when using titles with other effects such as DVEs. In that mode, the title must have its input disconnected and this visibly changes the blending. The "Blended title" and "Title in DVE" sections in the image above shows what happens - note the lightness of the drop shadow.

This effect will correct that. Add this to the title and add the DVE after that, disconnect the video input to the title and select "Crawl/Roll/Titles" in this effect. Set the blend mode to "Export fg with alpha" and the problem is solved. You will see the same result as shown in the "Title through BlendX to DVE" section of the image.

Any blend mode apart from "Export fg with alpha" lets it be used in place of a Lightworks blend effect. When used in this way it reasonably closely emulates most of the Photoshop blend modes.

Extrusion matte is a drop shadow-like effect which extrudes from the edges of a matte image to add a 3D look to the graphic. The extrusion may be either linear or radial and can be shaded by the foreground image, colour shaded, or flat colour filled. It's also possible to export the alpha channel for use in downstream effects.

Note that in common with any of the edge manipulation effects here if using a Lightworks generated title you should manually adjust the routing for best results. The routing below is an example: note that the title has had its input disconnected.

This is a simple blend utility with the ability to adjust the position, size and rotation of the image being matted and crop it. The alpha channel can also be inverted if needed to support the less common inverted alpha logic. It isn't intended as a replacement for the blend effect, but an alternative when you need the extra flexibility this effect offers.

This allows you to take a title or any other image or video and duplicate it up to four times into separate layers. Those layers can be independently zoomed and repositioned, and their transparency can be independently adjusted. And finally, if 4 images from the same source aren't enough for you, just cascade the effect. Here's a setup that will give you up to eight overlay images.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Be aware that the overlays are processed with overlay 1 as the topmost layer, then overlay 2, 3 and 4. If you don't need the increasing reduction in visibility this will give, you will need to compensate. In order, 20%, 25%, 33%, 50% will give a balanced density between all layers and the background. When using a single image without a background layer the respective figures are 25%, 33%, 50%, 100%.

Of course the above constraint is only important with solid images. Titles and other images with an alpha channel will not be affected to the same degree. For example, the sample screen grab above was created with all overlays set to 50% transparency.

Note that if used with a Lightworks title effect, the input to the title effect should be manually disconnected as shown above for best results.

This effect adds directional blurs to a key or in fact any image with an alpha channel. The default applies a radial blur that points away from the effect centre. That centre can be put up to one full frame height and/or width outside the actual frame.

Optionally it can produce a radial blur that points towards the effect centre, as well as a linear directional blur. The angle of the linear blur is set by dragging the effect centre away from the frame centre.

The angle of displacement is all that's used in linear blur mode. The amount of that displacement is totally ignored. Even so, it can help in setting up because moving the effect centre further away from the frame centre gives enhanced angular precision.

Note that if used with a Lightworks title effect, routing will need manual adjustment. See "Extrusion matte" above for details. Additionally, if there is no alpha channel available this effect can also be used to apply an overall directional blur to an image.

This is designed to generate a key from the foreground video and use that key to superimpose the foreground over the background or fill the foreground key shape with a flat matte colour. It has been designed with text supers in mind. The key can be produced from a white on black image or inverted. Alternatively the alpha channel can be used instead of the video to provide the key. The same controls apply to the alpha channel in this mode as do to the video.

A coloured border can also be generated from the key. Border opacity, width and colour are all adjustable. A drop shadow with the same range of adjustments can also be produced, and the position of that shadow can be adjusted.

Note that this isn't designed for use with Lightworks title effects. There are better tools available for that. You can if you wish, but routing will need manual adjustment. See "Extrusion matte" above for details.

This is a tool that can use an external matte signal to combine any two images. Its uses are pretty much limited by your own imagination. While similar in operation to the user wipes in the Lightworks wipe effect, this is a more specialised tool intended for use in keying operations. For example it can be used to combine an image with an external matte layer to make a graphic with alpha for use in one of the other effects here.

ALPHA TRANSITIONS

This is a special class of effect that has been designed to add transitions to titles, graphics and other sources with alpha channels. They have their own unique requirements. If you haven't used one before you should go to this post. It will tell you how to install, and more importantly, use any of these effects. If you want to see what any effect actually does, click on the MP4 link attached to each one.

You'll also find standard non-alpha versions of most of these effects in the TRANSITIONS section.

Alpha X-pinch squeezes the outgoing title or blended image to a point before vanishing, while zooming out at the same time. It reverses the process to bring in the incoming overlay. Trig functions have been used during the progress of the effect to make the acceleration smoother.

Unlike Wx_xPinch.fx which it is the alpha equivalent of, the two effect progress directions have been made symmetrical. When used with titles which by their nature don't occupy the full screen, subjectively this approach looked better.

This effect emulates the so-called "Pleasantville" effect. It's based on a modified version of the key generation section of Editshare's chromakey effect. Angled cropping from the octagonal vignette effect has been added to provide masking of areas of the selected colour that are not required.

As shown above, the effect can be inverted to suppress the selected colour. The saturation can also be adjusted for increased subtlety or to fade the selected colour in from black and white.

This effect detects edges to give a similar result to the well known art program effect. The edge detection is fully adjustable. Invert and add a little blur over it to make video looks as if it's been sketched.

It also provides a checkbox to move the generated edge to the alpha channel. This allows the effect to be overlaid over the video and only affect the edges. This allows masking the Gaussian Blur to blur overly sharpened edges, as just one example of the flexibility this technique provides.

This can use either image levels to produce the glow or detect the edges of an image and produce the glow from those. The glow can be applied to the image using any of five blend modes and can use the native image colours, a preset colour, or two colours which cycle. Cycle rate can be adjusted, and the detected edges can be separately mixed back over the effect. It's useful in edge enhancement, rim lighting, and highlight burn out as well as more extreme effects.

This was originally called called YA blur (Yet Another Blur) and was an accidental discovery that looked interesting. The original was probably closest to the sort of effect that you get when looking through a fogged window. It has now been enhanced by the addition of a fogginess adjustment. The resulting effect is capable of generating some extremely ethereal looks.

Iris BokehStylizeBlurs and SharpensIrisBokeh.fxkhaverIris_bokeh.zip

Iris Bokeh is similar to Bokeh, but on steroids. It provides control of the iris (5 to 8 segments or round), the size, rotation, threshold and pretty much anything else that you're likely to need to adjust. This has had considerable work done on it to make it Linux/Mac compatible. The compatibility of the previous version was poor.

The Windows version can only be run on Windows systems that support pixel shader 3.0 or better. That shouldn't be a problem for any Windows system that meets the minimum requirements for Lightworks.

This blur can be switched between standard and big blur modes. The threshold can be adjusted, the mask can be derived from the luminance value or alpha channel of the source video or the mask can be from the luminance or alpha channels of another video track. There is also the option to blur the mask for smooth transitions between blurred and unblurred areas. This is a very powerful effect.

This is an extremely strong directional blur. The blur angle can be adjusted through a full 360 degrees, and sampling can be adjusted to range from a succession of discrete images to smooth blur. An external mask input is available to control where the mask appears.

It would probably pay not to be too heavy handed when setting up the strength though.

Soft foggy blurStylizeBlurs and SharpensSoftFoggyBlur.fxjwrlSoftFoggyBlur.zip

This blur effect mimics the classic "petroleum jelly on the lens" look. It does this by combining a radial and a spin blur effect. The spin component has an adjustable aspect ratio which can have significant effect on the final look. It uses the same technique as the soft spin blur effect below.

Really just a directional blur, this effect is implemented using the same technique as the soft spin blur effect below. As a result it gives a very smooth, soft result. The blur length, direction and density are all adjustable.

EffectCategorySubcategoryFilenameAuthorDownload
Soft spin blurStylizeBlurs and SharpensSoftSpinBlur.fxjwrlSoftSpinBlur.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This effect arose out of debugging work done on FxSpinBlur, however this version is entirely original. The blur sample rate has been vastly increased from the original and the difference in smoothness is noticeable. This improvement is also partially a side effect of the blur arc technique having been changed. Unlike the earlier effect which applied a clockwise rotation, this effect uses a bidirectional spin. For example, a 30 degree arc will be produced by applying simultaneous 15 degree clockwise and anticlockwise blurs.

It's also possible to fade the effect in and out, and to adjust for any change of video levels that extreme amounts of blur can cause. If you're blurring a black to white edge the result will inevitably be grey. This adjustment attempts to partially compensate for that. That said, in the video below no level compensation at all has been applied.

Soft zoom blurStylizeBlurs and SharpensSoftZoomBlur.fxjwrlSoftZoomBlur.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This blur effect is similar to the Lightworks radial blur effect, but is very much softer in the result that it can produce. The blur length range is also much greater than that provided by the Lightworks effect. It's possible to move the blur centre to one corner of the frame and still have a smooth result at the diagonally opposite corner. It uses the same technique as the soft spin blur effect above.

Super blurStylizeBlurs and SharpensSuperBlur.fxjwrlSuper_blur.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This is a spin-off from a radially sampled blur tool developed for several other user effects. It can be used to produce extreme levels of blurring not readily achievable by conventional blur effects. The effect is very smooth in operation, and the blur mix level can be adjusted to give a very convincing mist filter effect for those times when you didn't pack the Promist.

However such smoothness comes at some cost. Because each pixel is sampled 240 times if you have a low performance system this effect may choke.

Unsharp MaskStylizeBlurs and SharpensUnsharpMask.fxjwrlUnsharpMask.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This effect was originally by soundandvisionunit and based on khaver's Big Blur, and was designed to help sharpen an image. That version has now been withdrawn since it was fundamentally flawed and couldn't be made to function cross-platform. A new version which uses similar design principles has been created, and does operate cross-platform. The parameters used are slightly different - one (blur x 5) has been withdrawn and two new ones (edge gain and edge gamma) added in its place.

Be warned: this is an extreme effect. Unless you really can't get what you need with either of the Lightworks sharpen effects it probably would be better to use one of those.

This exposure levelling effect is designed to correct fairly static shots where the exposure varies over time. The top frame shows the example frame, the middle one is an over-exposed section of the video, and the bottom frame is the result of the effect.

To use it select a frame that has the best exposure and create a frame grab using the Lightworks command "Save current frame" that you will find in "Key Assignments". Import that frame and add it to the edit on a track under the video for the entire duration of the clip to be processed. Add the effect and check the box to view the sample frame then adjust the E1, E2, and E3 points to areas where there is minimal movement in the video clip. The only constraint is that the chosen points must not be in pure black or white areas.

If there is camera movement uncheck "Use Example Points for Video" and keyframe the V1, V2 and V3 points so they track the E1, E2 and E3 points. Uncheck "Show Example Frame" and the exposure in the video clip should stay close to the sample frame's exposure. Further fine tuning can be done with the "Tune" slider.

This effect is a simple device to select from up to four different outputs. It was designed for, and is extremely useful on complex effects builds to check the output of masking or cropping, the DVE, colour correction pass or whatever else you may need. Since it has very little overhead it may be safely left in situ when the effects setup process is complete.

This effect converts 8 bit video to 10 bit video by using spline interpolation on luma and chroma to create intermediate colours. Set your project to 10 bit and set the source width and height resolution for the best results. The vectorscope image (above) on the left shows the original image. Note the gaps in the trace. The one on the right has been tenderized. Note the fewer gaps, which means more colours.

Note: There will be a slight softening (tenderizing) of the image. Also, the alpha channel is not changed.

Inspired by an earlier discussion on these forums, this effect generates greyscale test patterns. A total of ten unique patterns can be generated. There are three versions of simple ten step bars, three of the compound bar pattern, two simple grey scales, and two compound grey scales. The variants of each are produced by selecting between BT.709 levels, full gamut decimal, or full gamut hexadecimal. Although it's possible to select both decimal and hex versions of both gradient patterns they produce identical results.

This effect is pretty self explanatory. When you need it, you need it. It zooms in and out of the red, green and blue channels independently to help remove the colour fringing (chromatic aberration) in areas near the edges of the frame often produced by cheaper lenses. To help see the fringing better while adjusting click the saturation check box.

Pixel Fixer is designed to repair dead pixels. Here is khaver's comprehensive explanation.

Add the first clip to a timeline and add the Pixel Fixer effect to the clip. It will show a magnified area of the frame with a green pixel in the middle. That's the target. It defaults to a single pixel but you can select a pixel pattern of up to 4 pixels in a group. Select the different patterns and the green pixels change.

Using the on-screen cross-hairs, move the magnified area to where the dead pixels are and then use the X Adjust and Y Adjust to fine tune the target over the dead pixel(s). Check the "Fix" box to hide the dead pixel(s), then un-check "Magnify".

If you need to fix more pixels just add another Pixel Fixer effect on top of the last one.

Once you have fixed all the pixels, save the effect as a template using a unique name. You will now be able to simply add this saved effect to other clips shot with the same camera and they will be automatically fixed.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

What ALE_SMOOTH_CHROMA does is probably best explained in the screen grab. It smooths colour information. Its most appropriate use is probably to smooth chroma in 4:2:0 footage. It works by converting the RGB signal to YCbCr then blurs the chroma Cb/Cr components. The result is then converted back to RGB using the original Y channel. This ensures that luminance sharpness is maintained and just the colour component is softened. An example of its effective use would be to anti-alias a bad 4:2:0 chromakey, or perhaps to reduce colour noise in a low light level image.

CC Helper (Colour Correction Helper) is designed to provide up to six user selected reference colour patches. Individual colour patches can be turned off if you need fewer than six and you can change the colour patches to gradients if you wish. The colour value range of the patches can be switched to 100% meaning that the selected colour will be scaled so that the highest of the RGB channels will become 100%. You can also slide the bars up and down over the video to clear areas that you need to see, and optional RGB level meters can be laid over individual colour patches.

Add the effect to a clip, select the pixels you want to check and select "Display Bars". When using the colour picker, you can click and drag to select a rectangular region. The resultant colour will be the average of the selected pixels. Then add a Colour Correction effect to the chain and adjust using CC Helper to assist. Full instructions by khaver are here.

PolyGrad emulates to a degree the operation of power windows. This maskable grading tool can add that little extra polish to your colourgrade.

To use it, apply the effect and turn on "Show Guides". This will allow you to position the corners of the polygon mask. The red tinted area shows where the colourgrade effect will be at 100%, and the green area is where the effect influence will be at 0%. Increasing the feather amount will increase the area between the red and green zones. Just be aware that when a corner node gets near the edge of frame it will snap to the edge.

Once the areas are set turn off "Show Guides" and adjust the other parameters as you would any other colourgrading tool.

S curve adjustmentColourTechnicalRGBsCurve.fxjwrlRGBsCurve.zip

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This Lightworks effect allows the master luminance S curve and the individual RGB curves to be adjusted. It does this by applying a symmetrical quadratic level change to the image. The knee of the curve may be set either as a master S profile or by means of individual YRGB settings. Unlike JMovie's effect the S curves are symmetrical and individually adjustable. A choice of log/antilog, trigonometric and inverse trigonometric curves can be selected.

In the log/antilog mode more and more positive values progressively increase the slope of the S profile. A value of zero corresponds to a linear transfer rate with no visible effect, while values below zero invert the profile. The individual profile settings in this effect are internally legalised to fall within the range of -1.00 to 1.00. Unlike most Lightworks effects, manually entering values outside those limits will result in the same effect as if that profile was set to the corresponding maximum positive or negative value.

With the two trigonometric profiles behaviour is a little different. The zero point on the curves adjustment applies a symmetrical curve, while moving away from zero makes the curve less and less symmetrical. In this mode values aren't range limited. It's quite possible to manually overdrive the transfer curve. The screen capture below gives an idea of the sorts of the transfer curves available.

Bordered crop started out to be a revision to SimpleCrop.fx, but since it now adds a feathered, coloured border and a soft drop shadow has been given its own name. It's similar to Triple_DVE.fx without the DVE components or the rounded borders but with the ability to swap foreground and background instead. The alpha channel selection of SimpleCrop.fx was dropped, since it was never really of any use. Disconnecting the background layer achieves exactly the same result. Reducing the border width to zero gives a soft feathered edge to the crop boundaries.

This effect started life as an Art Deco take on the classic DVE effect. It produces two independently adjustable borders around a cropped foreground image and allows the foreground image to be resized and positioned inside the crop window. It overlays adjustable classic Deco "flash lines" inside the border. As well as that, it allows the foreground cropped composite with its borders to be independently scaled and positioned. This means that you no longer need to use two DVE effects to scale and position an image inside a cropped window. Any or both borders and the gap can be scaled to zero, as can the flash lines. Finally, as the cropped composite is zoomed out over the background the user can choose to have a single instance of it on screen or multiple versions.

This is designed to be a very straightforward portrait to landscape rotator/180 degree rotator. It does that very effectively over a mixture of backgrounds. With all background mix settings set to zero a transparent black surround is produced, and the resulting image may be blended with other effects.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

The foreground image can be rotated through plus or minus 90 degrees, or given a full 180 degree rotation to invert the image. As it is rotated it's also corrected for size so that no part of the image is lost. The image can be independently scaled from one quarter size to four times it's actual size. The width can be trimmed from half size to twice size to allow fine tuning of the aspect ratio.

A single symmetrical crop tool is provided to crop the left-right and top-bottom edges of the foreground. This is also provided with a coloured border and feathering. The vertical crop defaults to 110% of screen height to ensure that no colour bleed or feathering will be visible unless it's absolutely required. The crop width tracks the rotation and scaling of the foreground automatically.

In the background mix section the three mix faders have a bottom up priority. That is, the colour fader has highest priority and overrides all others. The foreground fader has higher priority than the background fader and overrides it. The background fader simply fades from black to 100% level. The blur adjustment applies to the entire background mix.

The version of the foreground used in the background can be flipped, flopped. flip/flopped and stretched horizontally and/or vertically. It can also be positioned both horizontally and vertically. If the adjustment runs off the edge of the frame it will be stretched to ensure that the edges never become visible.

This has some of the same functions as the 3D DVE, but the settings menu does not look as interesting as that effect. This is three 2D DVE effects in one package. Of the first two, DVE 1 adjusts the foreground layer and DVE 2 adjusts the background one. The foreground can be cropped with square or rounded corners and can also be given a bi-colour border. Both the edges and borders can be feathered, and a drop shadow is also provided. The drop shadow has its own softness adjustment. Here's what you can expect to see on screen.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

DVE 3 takes the cropped, bordered output of DVE 1 as its input. This means that you can scale the background and foreground independently, then the adjust position and size of the cropped foreground, along with any masking, borders or what have you. Because of the way that the DVEs are created and applied they have exactly the same quality impact on the final result as a single DVE would.

Because of the power of this effect both of my earlier effects DualDVE.fx and DVEborder.fx have been withdrawn. If you have those effects you can by all means still use them if you feel the need. However this effect provides the entire functionality of each of those individual effects, and does it with less GPU overhead than either.

Designed as an all-in-one effect to emulate colour film ageing, this effect allows you to have a controllable amount of sprocket wear and tear, chemistry failure, physical damage and grain to your pristine images. The scratches in the image above are perhaps a little heavy handed, but that was done so that they would survive the screen grab size reduction. The effect itself can be as subtle as you like.

This effect simulates the old two-colour Duotone film colour process. It makes no claim as to accuracy. It is simply a filter that gives a result that subjectively looks similar to Duotone prints. Filter saturation is adjustable to simulate dye fading.

Originally designed by ramana (with help from khaver) to simulate a range of film "looks", it can also be used as a general purpose grading tool. It has undergone a substantial rewrite to correct a cross-platform bug that meant that Linux and OS-X users only saw monochrome images (thank you gr00by). In the process the user interface has changed somewhat. Curve parameters are now grouped, as are gamma and master effects.

Filmic look 2018ColourPreset LooksFilmicLook2018.fxjwrlFilmicLook2018.zip

Based on the earlier FilmicLook.fx, this effect simulates a filmic curve with exposure adjustment and controllable halation and vibrance. In this version there is a new exposure setting, so there are now eight parameters. The order of the parameters has been changed from the earlier version allowing two logical groups to be formed as well as the non-grouped range and amount settings.

  • Video range - allows the adjustment range to be set to BT.709 or full gamut.
  • Amount - mixes the final modified image with the original.
  • Exposure - allows a plus or minus one stop exposure correction.
  • S curve - adjusts the amount of S-curve correction applied.
  • Halation - mimics the back scatter found with older types of film stock. Also useful to provide highlight burnout.
  • Colour temp - swings colour temperature between lower (red) and higher (blue).
  • Saturation - increases or reduces master saturation. Adjustment range is from black and white to double the saturation of the original image.
  • Vibrance - operates on midtone saturation levels and applies a selective increase.

Exposure is adjusted before range limiting because we need the exposure fed to the main effect to be correct, and this parameter is meant as a correction adjustment. For the same reason colour temperature is also adjusted ahead of the range limit. The sense of that setting has been swapped so that the higher the colour temperature and the bluer the image the more positive the control now is. There's no change in luminance as the colour temperature is adjusted.

Both vibrance and halation are adjusted logarithmically. By doing this we get a more natural feel to the adjustment. The halation generation technique has been slightly altered from that used in the earlier effect for a result that more closely resembles the look of film. Vibrance is very similar to the sort of effect you get with the Photoshop vibrance filter - thanks gr00by for the algorithm.

Old Time Movie could add scratches and grain, and even external grain or noise. However it has been superseded by Old Film Look, and the older effect has been withdrawn. You can still get it if you need it, because it's included with Lightworks effects nowadays.

This version is described by the author as looking "much better than my original 'Old Time Movie' effect" and "This one has dirt that actually looks like dirt". It also has the advantage that it doesn't require extra tracks to get the most out of it.

NOTE: This effect requires a specific shader mode when used with Windows. For Lightworks versions 14.5 and up this will automatically be assigned. A legacy Windows version has been included in the zip file for users of earlier versions of Lightworks.

This simulates the non-linear flare that an anamorphic lens produces - those purplish horizontal flares often seen on movie blockbusters. Use the Threshold slider to isolate just the bright lights and the Length slider to adjust the size of the flare. Checking the "Show Flare" checkbox will display the flare against black.

Glint creates star filter-like highlights, with 4, 6 or 8 points selectable. The glints/stars can be rotated and may be normal or rainbow coloured. They may also be blurred, and the "Show Glint" checkbox will display the glints over a black background.

Because this effect makes many GPU passes users with underpowered systems may have to render it for usable playback speed.

Chromakey plusKeyUser EffectsChromakeyPlus.fxjwrlChromakeyPlus.zip

This effect is designed to produce a keyed image from quite difficult key sources. The image above shows a composite result, but also has overlayed lines showing the masks and cropping being used. The inner mask is shown in red, the outer mask in blue and a top of frame crop shown in green. Note that the crop is set at an angle, as can each of the four crops. Normally none of those lines would be displayed.

The routing used to do this made use of a foreground with blue elements (that needed to be retained) over a severely shaded blue background, a background image and a single bi-colour mask layer.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

Normally separate mask layers would be used and the mask input would default to the luminance setting. "Luminance" is somewhat of a misnomer because it uses the maximum value of the RGB channels and not luminance, but I can't think of a more appropriate name for it.

The range of adjustments possible may seem daunting at first sight, but the effect at its simplest can be driven using just the parameters in the chromakey section. Here's the user interface showing all the adjustments possible.

DeltaMaskKeyUser EffectsDeltaMask.fxkhaverDeltaMask.zip

This is khaver's take on the delta mask or difference matte effect. You will need 3 video tracks. V1 should be the foreground clip, V2 the static background freeze frame and V3 the new background you want added. Once you set up the delta key as best as you can, use the routing panel to route the output of the delta mask effect to the foreground input of a blend effect and your new background track to the background input.

The screen caps below show the foreground track, the static matching background and the resultant mask generated using the "Show" checkbox.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

When the "Show" checkbox is checked, the output is a B&W mask. You can feed this to the "Mask" input of the "Masked Blend" effect instead of the regular "Blend" effect if desired. When it's unchecked the alpha channel of the foreground clip is replaced with the mask. When the "Split Screen" box is checked, you will get a split screen of your foreground and static background tracks so using the "Background Gain" slider you can match exposure as close as possible.

This oddly named effect is a green- blue- or whatever screen keyer. It's a quick simple tool with just two parameters, key colour and key balance. It can be used to quickly and easily get rid of all that green or blue from your effects edit, for doing a postviz or for just validating that the greenscreen is shot properly. Works, and works well.

CrhomaKey despill is a background based despill tool. It can change the green/blue spill in the foreground image with colour derived from a background layer. The actual background can be used, or a colour Matte effect can be generated and used instead.

It can also be used to quickly and simply change overall green/blue colours in a scene, ie., change a spring landscape to an autumn one. The screenshot should give an idea of its use.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

This effect is at its simplest just a lumakeyer. However the alpha channel generated by the keyer can also be gated with any alpha component present in the foreground image, allowing you to easily produce combination keys. If that's not enough, it also gives you a simple DVE with cropping ability, which is applied to the foreground before the keyer gets it. Finally, it can also be configured to output the keyer's alpha channel for use with other effects. When in that mode any background is blanked.

For further details see this post.

This is a simple keyer that has only six adjustments, the key colour, key clip, key gain, feathering and the defringe controls. Defringing can either use the standard desaturate technique, or can replace the key colour with the background image either in colour or monochrome. Finally, the key can be faded in and out by adjusting the opacity setting.
