In setting up a workshop for members of the local radio and television station who want to learn how to use a videocamera, I decided to try and see if you could pull focus with the Sony HXR-MC2000e.
This is a camera without physically coupled zoom, so you have no idea where you are with your focus.
The camera also lacks a good, high resolution (and preferably) black and white viewfinder and peaking, so that makes it even harder.

Recording a couple of tries I decided to put them to some funny music that could've come straight out of Thomas The Tank Engine.

I also tried out the keyframe function of Lightworks to get rid of the title by letting the train wipe it out.

Nice! You used a masked blend effect?
Who said LWKS didn't have rotoscoping capabilities!

Actually, no, I keyframed a wipe on the title track every 2 or 3 frames.
That's also the reason why the title isn't wiped out totally right when the locomotive reaches the MC part of the title, I couldn't figure out a way to draw the shape of the locomotive so it would only wipe out the lower part of the letters instead of doing the whole bottom line at once.

I haven't really looked into masking or blends that much.
Coming from Adobe Premiere Pro (which is what we use at the local television station) I was searching for a garbage-matte kind of thing (maybe a matte translates to a mask quite well, not sure though) to keyframe with, as you can draw shapes with it (you have like, a four-point matte to take out under or overexposed pieces of a greenscreen in a stand-up kind of setting, and even a 16-point one to draw a silhouet-kind of shape around a person).

There are some variable polygon masks (up to 16 points) on the first page of the User Effects thread that can be used for garbage mattes or whatever.
