I was editing a long video and decided to drag and drop some footage earlier in an edit, and after 2 hours of editing that footage i moved right to realize the new footage didn't pushed the second half of the video to the right, but it overwrote what was there. I have undone 10 edits already and it cant go back any farther, how can I fix this

Welcome to the forums. It's a pity you've had to come here with such a disaster.

Unfortunately you can't fix this - you'll need to re-edit. Normally ten levels of undo is more than adequate, but for future reference, if you're going to make a radical change do it on a copy. Because an edit isn't new media but just a list it takes very little drive space, so there's no penalty for doing that. It's the way that professional editors work, and they do it for good reasons.

Next, forget drag and drop. Get your head around mark and park - it would have been obvious what had happened much earlier if you'd used replace rather than insert. Drag and drop is also slower and less precise than Lightworks' native edit mode. Simply mark one end of the clip that you wish to use, park at the other, then press "b" to replace or "v" to insert that clip into your timeline.

Unfortunately you can't fix this

That's not necessarily the case; In addition to the ten readily accessible undo-points, Lightworks also stores occasional 'milestones' for each of your edits too. A milestone is created every ten editing operations, and it stores ten milestones per edit. They are created for the sole purpose of recovering from absolute disasters. To take advantage of them you need to manually move/copy some files outside of Lightworks. For future reference, if you want to restore a milestone (and this really is for emergencies only) :

  1. Make a safe backup copy of your edit first
  2. Discover the 'cookie' (ie. unique ID) of your edit (you can find it in the tooltip that you get when you move the mouse over your edit viewer)
  3. Make a note of the project location that appears on the details page of the project card
  4. Exit lightworks
  5. Using explorer/finder/etc, navigate to the project folder (found in '3')
  6. Open the 'milestones' folder
  7. Open the folder whose name matches the cookie obtained in '2' - each of the files you see inside it is a 'milestone' for your edit
  8. Now replace <YourCookie>.ed5 in the project folder (discovered above in '3') with the milestone that you want
  9. Run up Lightworks

eg. If the cookie for your edit is E60V0123 and your project folder is

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Lightworks\Projects\P60V0111

you're looking to replace

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Lightworks\Projects\P60V0111\E60V0123.ed5

with one of the files in

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Lightworks\Projects\P60V0111\Milestones\E60V0123\

Thanks, Great White. I didn't know what the milestones folder did. Never too old to learn, I guess. Sorry that I misled you, cthornton.

This just saved my rear!

I lost the edit that I was working on when LW crashed, and it didn't show up in the "restore edits" menu.

I was able to locate the proper cookie in the Milestones folder & restore it from the last edit from last night.
I work in Manhattan, USA, but at night I cross the waters to sleep in Brooklyn, USA.

Also, post production is not an afterthought!

Hello!

I managed to do all the steps you mentioned, but it still didn't work!

It comes up with an error message that says:

"Lightworks editor application has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available"

This happened before I tried doing your steps as well. The same message came up with each file in the milestones folder as well. I really don't know what to do! Please can you help me?

Hello and welcome!

When exactly happens the crash, on startup or when trying to enter one or more specific projects?

It only happens when trying to open one specific project. All the other projects are fine.

I was working on the project and my laptop crashed. I haven't been able to open the project since.

In the project folder, there is a .odb.Backup file which was saved 2hrs before the crash. However, I'm not sure how to open this file.

I tried the "Restore item(s) from backups" option in lightworks, but used the maximum amount and still no luck. It doesn't even show an image on the thumbnail in lightworks.

It's possible that metadata of this project got damaged somehow and cause the crashes. There might be a fix.

Please sort the content of the \Lightworks\Projects folder by Modification Date Descending (newest first).

What are the names of the first two folders?

Thanks.

Would you mind posting these two folders and two additional folders named " GK0J04XP " and " GK0J06SG " in a zipped archive?

I'd see what can be done.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant, thanks.

Both projects do not crash my system. At a first glance I couldn't find obviously damaged files.

Just to make sure: Please hover with mouse over the thumbnail of the project which forces the crashes when opening. There you'll find Location. What project name do you read?
