Is eyeframe still recommended for LW?
If not, what can give me lightweight proxies for editing?

No.

Proxies can be made by LW in LW. Right click on a bin of clips - under Clip Commands select Media/Make Proxies.

In the main project tab under Video/Output/PlaybackMediaQuality select highes or lowest available.

When exporting the work LW will automatically use the highest available quality. Of course the high quality files must remain on the system and accessible by LW - don't computer delete or move them.

EDIT: Back to the main Project Tab: Under Media/Proxies the quality and therefore size of the proxies can be set. In general, probably not much much reason to deviate from the LW default setting.

Is generating proxies a particularly slow process?
I don't see any progress on the status line.

after an hour, I see only about 10% completed to GENERATE AUDIO WAVEFORMS, and zero on the PROXY progress line.

Proxy creation is a video encoding process. Usually, it's faster than exporting the same clips in 720p with the Youtube preset.

Seems like there is an active import process - Proxy making is the same in Flexible and Fixed.

If no clips are marked then all will be made into proxies - otherwise only the marked.

Not aware if there are any file formats which cannot be transcoded into a proxy.

FWIW

Figmo124 has obviously solved his problem.

For all other reading this discussion and have reached this post:

The internal proxy workflow has been designed to improve editing performance, when using demanding but well supported media, nothing else. All other media related problems, like sync issues, missing audio or picture, picture failures and many others, cannot be solved with internal proxies, but only by converting prior to import with third party software.

This can be done with any software which is suitable to fix the actual problem and can create formats which are well supported by Lightworks. Although not frequently recommended anymore, Eyeframe Converter has been for years, and still is, good transcoding software and usable for fixing many media related issues.

There is lots of search engine chatter about converters for YouTube streaming files.

Not sure if they are .ts, .flv or .mkv or a mixture of all three but all need nurturing for use in LW. Transport stream seems to be easier, flash files seem definitely to need conversion; bit confused about .mkv but don't see it very often.

What you can get for download depends on the streaming service, the specific video and the download software. E.g. "youtube-dl -F <link>" lists all available formats for the specified link.

I gather Matroska is the most versatile container available, it can carry almost everything and, it's free - the scene loves it. The major downside: Full support of all features is difficult to implement for reading/writing applications.

Problem has not continued. Apparently a result of of how I captured the Facebook video and went thru more conversion steps than needed.
Thanks to all contributing to my better understanding of video files and of LW operation.

On the topic of arcane formats - here's one not seen before.

This image is hidden for guests. Please log in or register to see it.

It's a .ts file the V opens and plays normally in LW and shows the 'correct' length - In VLC it shows start and end time as 00.00 but plays - guessing that's to do with the packetized nature of .ts.

The audio download does not import into LW

General
Complete name :
Format : ADTS
Format/Info : Audio Data Transport Stream
File size : 5.58 MiB
Overall bit rate mode : Variable

Audio
Format : AAC LC
Format/Info : Advanced Audio Codec Low Complexity
Format version : Version 4
Codec ID : 2
Bit rate mode : Variable
Channel(s) : 1 channel
Channel layout : C
Sampling rate : 44.1 kHz
Frame rate : 43.066 FPS (1024 SPF)
Compression mode : Lossy
Stream size : 5.58 MiB (100%)

The audio does play in VLC and shows sensible start and end times.

Perhaps issues with audio are why muxed .ts files do not always open in LW??
