Are you following the procedures found on P239-241 in the V14.5 User Guide found in Downloads > Documentation?

Which version of Lightworks and which operating system do you use?

If you are using a beta version, it would also be important to know which beta you are using (revision number?).

The changelog of latest 2020 beta, revision 119451, from 30 Jan 2020 says:

Made sure that default keyboard shortcuts do not reappear after having been overwritten

It might be worth it upgrading to the latest release first. Then assign your shortcuts again, restart Lightworks, and see if this fixes the issue. If some assigned shortcuts are still wrong/different, please post a list of them.

creating a .bak backup for old .prefs before importing would be nice.

The downside is, auto backups when loading new presets will pollute the Preferences folder, even more than they do today.

Auto backups have been there since V14.5: "<user name> (backup)(<sequential number>).prefs", when reverting to defaults, not when loading a new preset. I've never used one of those auto backups. I prefer saving modifications and reloading them to crosscheck.

However, all that doesn't help much if some custom assignments are wrong/dropped due to issues with the internal logic.

That's your opinion, mine is different.

You should see a backup when reverting to defaults, the naming follows the pattern posted above.

Do you see the backup when reverting to defaults?
