For those who have the same problem in the future, very early in this discussion..

If I'm not mistaken, speed changes affect a clip based on where the red marker is. That is, if the red marker is in the middle of a clip when applying a speed change, the frame that the red marker is on stays in place, but frames to the left AND right of it are adjusted to make the clip whatever speed was set.

To make it easy, I've seen the following instructions recommended.

  1. Insert the clip
  2. Move to where the speed change will start
  3. Make an empty cut (don't move the red marker)
  4. Change the speed
  5. Move to where the speed will change back
  6. Make an empty cut (again, don't move the red marker)
  7. Change the speed to 100%
  8. Trim (ie. shorten/lengthen) the third clip's tail to hide black or show missing frames

I'm feeling like an idiot now. Sorry for the confusion and my and your wasted time.

There are always going to be times when that technique is needed too. If you're working in already-cut sequences you need to be able to do that.

And apologies, rhinox202. If I had read back far enough in this thread I would have realised that you had already given those instructions.

No worries Vince! I knew you weren't following the steps
Intel Core 2 Quad (Q6600) :: 4GB :: 256GB SSD :: 1TB HD :: EVGA Geforce GTX 1050 Ti :: Win 10 Pro (1709) :: Lwks 14.1 Beta

My suggestion for a "carefree" workflow, as long as speed feature is different on both layout, switch to Fixed layout for speed changes on existing cuts, use the Resize option and forget about trimming.
That's much faster.

Brain is not working this morning. Resize option as opposed to scaling? Where is resize?

Thanks

In Fixed Layout, applies speed changes to already existing clips in the timeline and resizes accordingly without trimming.

Resize option:

Due to a recent bug, don't apply to grouped audio tracks.

It's just another way to do it, but it is faster if you have to apply multiple speed changes to already existing clips.

Still hoping to see this useful feature implemented in flexible layout as well.

Hugly

I shoot many commercials and rarely am I told when they will air. I'm a below-the-line guy and once I'm finished with a spot, I move on. When I coordinated the physical special effects for feature films, I knew when they would hit the big screen, but I stopped working features in 2010 due to an on-the-job helicopter accident. My work is now limited to commercials and sometimes soaps.

Have a good day,
Vince

BTW I worked on a HULU spot that involves a red dress burning.
