Here's the key assignments if you want to setup J-K-L shuttle control and are not using the Avid preferences.

Forward Nudge; Hold 'k' Tap 'l'
Reverse Nudge; Hold 'k' Tap 'j'

Play; 'l' (repeat to increase speed)
Reverse; 'j' (repeat to increase speed)
Stop; 'k'

Play 1/2 speed; Hold 'k' Press 'l'
Play backwards 1/2 speed; Hold 'k' Press 'j'

Many other applications use this same combination so it is not a bad thing to get accustomed to using. Pretty sure FCP uses the same, I know the Sony XDCam clip browser uses this.

FCP is basically the same. I think the only difference is holding down both K & L (or k & j) together play at 1/3 speed, not half.
I work in Manhattan, USA, but at night I cross the waters to sleep in Brooklyn, USA.

Also, post production is not an afterthought!
