If you're just wanting one colour, you can use the vectorscope and use the colour adjustments, so that you just have one colour. However, it's a fiddle to pull all the other colours back back to the cente of the vectorscope, just leaving your desired colour as a spike.

I've done it on a Sony 2/3" HDCAM broadcast camera, but not on a NLE.

hm, not sure if that would work.
if your face should look black & white (grayscale, UK), you'd want to move orange and red etc.

EDIT: It isn't by far perfect, but I hope it shows the basic workflow understandably. To work with this kind of "colour separation" in practice with good results you'll have to capture the colours to isolate later in post with care. Especially disable any kind of automatic white balance and automatic exposure if possible.

It's a little late now, I know, but this effect duplicates the so-called "Pleasantville" effect. It's based on a modified version of the key generation section of Editshare's chromakey effect. Angled cropping from the octagonal vignette effect has been added to provide masking of areas of the selected colour that aren't required.

The example below shows the sort of result that can be achieved. In this case because I wanted a broad range of colours to show I sampled the sky. This would normally show everything but the sky in black and white, but I then inverted the effect to make just the sky appear black and white.

The implication in that article that it's a unique effect is misleading. I was doing it in the 1970s, based on effects that I had seen in earlier films. No doubt others can make the same claim.

Yes, technically it isn’t a digita-onlyl effect. Using black and white film and colour filters to create masks from colour material to be used for composite copies was (and is) the main technique to correct or separate colours when using film only. Graphics industry did that until the eighties. It was possible (basically) from the early beginning of cinema with colour material.

I believe Pleasantville was the first feature film to use it intensively over the whole duration and to give the effect a specific meaning in the context of the story. Maybe a reason why people remember it so well?

Jwrl, good to see you back on board. I find it’s a good idea to combine selective colour correction with polymask in one effect. Thanks.
