When I import a series of photos using detect image sequences, the resulting sequence is very short, each picture lasting only a few milliseconds. Is there a way to have the image sequence play more slowly?

Welcome to the forum.

You can change the speed of each segment in the tumeline, Left click on the segment select speed and do the same on the little triangle with 100% and select the required speed, then click on do it.

Just to clarify: An 'Image Sequence' is a special representation of video.

With 'Detect image sequences' enabled, which is unfortunately default, a series of image files with strictly ascending trailing numbers will be imported as a single video clip. For instance, in a 30 fps project, an image sequence with 60 frames will appear as a video clip of 2 seconds duration. If you use the speed feature to slow this clip down to see each frame with a duration of three seconds, you have to set the speed to 1/(3*30) of its original speed, which is 1.11 percent. Still, the image sequence will appear as one single clip in the timeline. If you intend trimming single images out of that construction for duration, you have to set cuts accordingly.
It's better to travel well than to arrive...
