I have basically decided that I need to add two more buttons to make this more compatible with other editors, it needs a Control and an Alt. key to be able to hit all the Avid shortcuts. If I make another one, it will have these extra buttons on the right side of the jog wheel. Wish I had room for the Windows/Apple keys so that you could hit force quit when you get the spinning beach ball of death during your FCP session.

Just changed the circuit board for the right hand side buttons to add 2 more that can be used for control and alt. keys. This could allow each button to have 4 different functions (regular, shift+, cntrl+, alt+) too bad there is no way to get four levels of text under these buttons, three levels can be done if letter choice is used very carefully. Font's that small are tough to find so eventually I'll need to make my own small font that I can distribute. there is a 10mm square area that text can be jammed into, or not a lot of room.

And yes you could probably use cntrl+alt+ and other combinations, the keyboard controller says it will handle six simultaneous buttons pressed. the modifiers also work on the jog/shuttle too so there are some other possibilities. the reason for the additional modifiers is that Avid requires a lot of cntrl+ keys for things that Lightworks put out in the open like slip and slide trimming. There are also some mouse commands in LW that need alt. so it will definitely add to the over all functionality.

I'll probably start cutting the panels on the next controller sometime next week after I get all the parts ordered.

As a former tape editor and beloved of Sony's BVE Jog/Shuttle wheel but new to LW, surely this would seem to be a quick/cheap console solution:

xkeys.com/xkeys/xk12JSH.php
Custom Haswell z87 i7 3.9Ghz 4770
System SSD, 16TB Internal RAID 0, Cache SSD
16GB DDR3, Thunderbolt, Nvidia GTX 970 G1 Maxwell GPU
Lightworks Pro with DNxHD license
Resolve 15 with OxygenTec ProPanel
X-Keys Pro 68 key USB Jog/Shuttle controller
2 x 24" HD GUI, 24" 10bit Rec.709 IPS Monitor
12G Decklink 4K SDI Pro>HD-Link Pro>Display Port
Sony 55" X9005B 4K Client Monitor
Sony Super 35 HD camera with Atomos ProRes Recorder
4x4" matte box/follow focus. Zeiss 'Contax' FF primes with Metabones 'Speed Booster'
Rode NTG-3/I-Rig XLR Phantom preamp

I don't think they had that product out when I started down this path, but I don't see much better value over the Contour ShuttlePro in this type of layout. It might be better because of the larger buttons but the function is probably exactly the same. Used ShuttleProv2 can be purchased of as little as $50, or get them new for half the price of that Xkeys device.

Decided that I don't like the touch pad, going back to trackball which is an $80 difference.

Bought a new Shuttle pro V2 from the US and after spending a lot of time programming the keys, it works very well - better than expected, especially the jog/shupple feature. With a 'console', LW truly comes alive!

PS: A USB trackball would be good for colour grading and DVE moves

The ShuttlePro v2 is OK but I find many of the buttons difficult to press, the ShuttleXpress is actually nicer on your fingers and costs half as much but only gives you the 5 buttons.

Hello
I really appreciate this Idea of a DIY-Console.
How about a Shuttle Dial is there a way to get one?
@Greg_E
If it's possible could you make a short video while editing with your console?
Intel Q9550; 16gb DDR2; Nvidia Geforce 460gtx; perc5/i Raidcontroller; 4x750gb Samsung Spinpoint F1; 4x2tb Hitachi 7K3000;

What if lightwors would support the mackie protocol for the MC control pro?
we would have 8 Faders + extension, plus jog/shuttle wheel etc for 900 bucks

the Lightworks manual says it support mackie faders but no more information on setup

A video is one of the things I've been meaning to do but just haven't gotten around to making it. Definitely going to wait until I finish assembling the version with the control and alt. keys.

The only place I've found to buy a shuttle/jog control like this is to get it from Contour, I've been using the Xpress device as the donor. If I ever get the time, I'll build an entirely new jog/shuttle control.

Updated the page with the new button configuration, you might need to refresh your cache to see the new image. I have a much higher resolution image if you click on the small version.

It is very good that there is a question about 3DConnexion manipulators. Even Linux Ubuntu has native support for this manipulator. If You can make navigation in LightWorks this manipulator is going to be great!
