Just a quick update on this - I ran the file through Handbrake and converted it to Mp4 and it now works successfully. What I'd like to know is - why did the Avi file not work and what are the recommended settings in Handbrake to ensure I lose as little quality as possible ( I just used the default)

Thank you for any help offered

Hello,

Basically Lightworks supports several variants of DV video. Unfortunately, there's capturing software which creates non-compliant files.

In this particular case I cannot say what cause the trouble with the sound. It might be the PCM format settings "Big/signed", I would have expected to see "Little/signed".

From my point of view, Handbrake isn't the ideal tool for converting this kind of video, for several reasons. It's possible and I can post some usable settings, but first, I'd suggest trying the FFmpeg template below:

ffmpeg -i "<input>.avi" -c:v copy -c:a pcm_s16le -ar 48000 -y "<output>.avi"
It's better to travel well than to arrive...

Here you'll find information on how to install and set the environment variables on Windows:

Tell how it works for you.

I've installed ffmpeg and set it up as per the instructions. I've pasted the command I'm using (from the one you suggested ) and the subsequent error.

ffmpeg -i "<C:\Users\Ian\Pictures>2002-08-02 23.07.41 F0016_2.avi" -c:v copy -c:a pcm_s16le -ar 48000 -y "<C:\Users\Ian\Pictures>2002-08-02 23.07.41 F0016_2.avi"

C:\>ffmpeg -i "<C:\Users\Ian\Pictures>2002-08-02 23.07.41 F0016_2.avi" -c:v copy -c:a pcm_s16le -ar 48000 -y "<C:\Users\Ian\Pictures>2002-08-02 23.07.41 F0016_2.avi"
'ffmpeg' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

The message indicates that 'cmd.exe' can't find the location of 'ffmpeg.exe' in the environment variables 'PATH' . In other words, something went wrong when adding the location to the variable. Furthermore the characters '<' and '>' have to be removed from the command line. ***

If you can't fix it. Please tell in which folder 'ffmpeg.exe' resides on your system. Then I'll post the entire command line for you to copy and paste.

Edit: And, the filenames for <input> and <output> must be different while keeping the extensions as they are.

New command line:
C:\Users\Ian>ffmpeg -i "C:\Users\Ian\Pictures>Testfile.avi" -c:v copy -c:a pcm_s16le -ar 48000 -y "C:\Users\Ian\Pictures>Testfileout_Conv.avi"

Same error
'ffmpeg' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

I've also attached a screen grab of the Path variable. ffmpeg resides in C:\ffmpeg\bin
Thanks

Sorry - command line should actually be
ffmpeg -i "C:\Users\Ian\Pictures\Testfile.avi" -c:v copy -c:a pcm_s16le -ar 48000 -y "C:\Users\Ian\Pictures\Testfileout_Conv.avi"
Same error

Just as an update - by including the path of the ffmpeg.exe file in the commmand line it works properly so it's obviously something I'm doing wrong setting the path variable

If the file 'ffmpeg.exe' resides in the folder 'C:\ffmpeg\bin', I would think removing the <backslash> character ' \ ' prior to ' ;C:\ffmpeg\bin ' should fix it.

Hugly discovered that I had to set up the environment variable Path in the User variables instead of System variables as suggested in the setup link you gave. All working fine now. Thanks for your help - off to learn about ffmpeg now!
