Chequerboarding (which automatically adds handles,if possible) exists for audio tracks only and is some kind of legacy feature, I believe.
It's better to travel well than to arrive...

Whenever I hand off to sound, color or VFX, I usually type up some notes to include with the AAF, XML, etc.

I usually tell them where I've used canned vs location sound, speed changes, repositioning, layering, timecode problems, etc. Anything that might slow down the operator at the receiving end gets noted by timecode and how I worked around it.
I work in Manhattan, USA, but at night I cross the waters to sleep in Brooklyn, USA.

Also, post production is not an afterthought!

I've found that AAF works well for interchange with Lightworks. It's been flawless for me, I was able to sync audio and video in Resolve and then export an AAF for editing in Lightworks. Going back worked just as well.

AAF has also worked really well for me for importing edits to Scratch and Mistika, so that would be my recommendation if I were the colorist.
