DVCPro100 is by design an anamorphic format (in this case it turns obviously 1920x1080 progressive into 1280x1080 interlaced). This format is by no means a good choice with your source material.

With the MXF container, Lightworks uses the OP-Atom standard, which expects video and audio streams in separate files. All software aware of this standard will join the streams when reading and decoding, and split them when encoding and writing. The separate sound files should be in the media space and sound should be audible in preview.

Explaining all that, I wonder how you have created this file with current V14.5 release? What version of Lightworks do you run?

V14.5!

An odd situation indeed...

Perhaps I should try transcoding a video file that was recorded around the same time? I will also try a proxy, although I trust it will provide the audio just fine. It seems transcoding is another animal!

I believe I've found the sound file in the 'Sound' folder next to 'Material' but VLC, WMP or foobar won't play it.

That's odd, indeed.

V14.5 doesn't show a selection for DVCPro in MXF container, at least here. Current V14.6 beta does, but it appears to be not stable. V14.0 did, as far as I can remember.

My suggestion, stay with proxies, it's easier to handle.

A possbility but I wouldn't technically know...

But could it be that after putting a video through Handbrake, AND THEN taking it into Lightworks and transcoding it created the issue we have here?

That's the only thing I can think of that differs from the rest.

I don't think so, but usually I never say never, without evidence in my hands.

The MP4 file you've shown above doesn't look as if it's been created with Handbrake?

Yup.

NDI integration will speed up review and approval processes of broadcast business customers significantly, I suspect.
