Here's the same machine with a Radeon RX 6800.

Bit hard to compare, the K4200 is from about 2016 and the Radeon RX 6800 from 2020.

Not sure that the age difference would make a 25x difference in the 1st test, 20x in the 2nd test or a 6x difference in rendering

When my new box is built it may just be AMD CPU and GPU, if they are not out of stock

@hugly-- Doubt I'll be able to run tests on both cards. This build has been problem after problem, and I still have one to overcome with the AMD. And I have to sell the 2080 Super to afford groceries. But I promise -- if time permits, I will.

Great, even if you can test just one of them and share the results.

Here's the 720p result. Pro license is on other machine so no 1080p result.

Thanks for sharing.

With your 3950X paired with a Radeon RX 6800, I'd would have expected to see less than 15 seconds for exporting the test sequence in h.264/MP4 720p24, not 3 minutes 30 seconds.

Something is wrong.

As matter of interest, how long takes exporting just the clip 'Jockey 1080p24'.

This is Clip Jockey 1080p24, video only, no audio.

With audio, it takes 5 seconds.

Very good CPU performance. My 1920x needs 6 seconds for 720p24 export of the clip. The clip has sound, which should play in preview and in the exported file.

Something is fundamentally wrong with your GPU. You should expect 10 seconds for exporting the test sequence with an RX 6800.

@hugly -- Thanks for the advice. Tried to follow the instructions on the page, to no avail. Searched some forums to see if others were having the same problem. Below is what I found:

Re: Can't install amdgpu drivers on Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS (Kernel 5.8.0-41-generic)

Dear AMD support team,

could you please give some status to your customers regarding that issue? It's been a while since we've got some update on this topic.

Best regards,

Just some customer

No, because this is standard practice for software "engineering." They may or may not fix this if they get an urge, otherwise, they have no plans on doing anything except play air hockey and post on Instagram.

Sigh!

Installed the latest kernel and that also won't accept the drivers.

I'm by no means a Linux Guru, but gather installing kernels on a configured system is tricky business and can cause a lot of trouble, not only with drivers.

I don't know the history of your installation, but if I had the kind of problems you're encountering, I'd certainly consider a clean installation of the operating system, after saving all user data at a safe place. After the installation and without modifying any drivers or the kernel, I'd try again.

@hugly -- as always, am grateful for your advice. This time, I only installed a later kernel after the current one wouldn't accept the AMD driver. Still had the same problem. Seems a lot of folks are having the same trouble with AMD GPU drivers on Ubuntu 20.04 -- enough to make me comfortable that the trouble isn't within my system. I'll just wait until it's sorted out. Lightworks works fine as is, for my purposes, although it would be nice to benchmark well.

If good benchmarks is what you are looking for, enjoy what you've shared. The Lightworks GPU tests of the AMD GPU are extraordinarily good.

Just avoid comparing real world performance with others based on test sequences, for the time being.
