Hi,

A bit of context: I had been successfully using Lightworks on my Linux system with Antergos (Arch-based) since last autumn until last week. Then, somehow the /boot directory got empty and I wasn't able to restore my system so I decided to start afresh and give MX Linux (a Debian-based distro) a shot

I kept 2 old partitions (/home and /data, on 2 separate drives) intact and they system works fine. I have a Xeon E5-2630 v2, 32 GB of RAM and an Nvidia GTX 980 with proprietary drivers installed.

Jack is installed and works and the /home/Lightworks folder is where it used to be. I downloaded and installed the 14.5 .deb file. At first it crashed during the setting up phase then it crashed after the media folder initialisation (logs attached).

It somehow throws errors about textures and - most importantly - GLXOpenGLContext.

I do have nvidia-cg-toolkit installed. I have no concern about old projects, they all have already been rendered but I was concerned about keeping the old licence and preferences since it is the exact same machine.

Any help?

Thanks a lot!

Hello,

GLXOpenGLContext::makeCurrent() failed

I can imagine that you saw some warnings or error messages when installing the .deb package on MX Linux?

You are about switching your Debian distro, why not considering the use of one of the supported distros, Ubuntu Linux and Linux Mint?

As far as I can remember, the installation involved no issue. I reinstalled it this morning just for good measure but - as you can see from the logs - to no avail.

Actually, since I have basically finished setting up the system and it works, I'd rather not wipe it all out and install everything again without any guarantee THIS issue would be solved.

I could try installing the newest nvidia drivers from source (which are newer than those in the repo) but it's risky and I am not even sure what exactly is the cause of the issue, which is why I posted here.

Open source drivers for Nvidia cause issues,so are best avoided.

Where do you see open source drivers used??
I wrote I installed the 418.74 nvidia drivers - even the log says NVIDIA Corporation not nouveau.....

Anyone with a REAL, EFFECTIVE idea of what the issue is and a possible solution??

Thanks

Update: support says Debian is not supported, which is funny since they provide a deb file and Ubuntu is a Debian derivative. I'll just try the beta for fun and see if it works. Otherwise, just try with Mint. Any issues with the new 19.2?

No feedback on Mint 19.2 on the forum, as far as I'm aware of.. Tell about your findings.

I still run Ubuntu 18.04 (very relaxed, long term release) and Mint 19.1, both for test purposes in a virtual environment.

Current V14.6 beta 4 has issues, e.g. enhanced contrast when exporting in h.264 format. I wouldn't recommend using it for any kind of serious works, only for testing.

Well, funnily enough, after uninstalling the stable 14.5, I've just tried the beta and it... kind of, sort of worked. It installed flawlessly, no dependency issue, just like 14.5 but... it launched! A few screen glitches but I was able to view the splash screen with my old projects. Then it crashed

I love stability but coming from an Arch-based distro, I got spoiled with the latest of the latest (LOL!) and already going way back on many things as I am now with MX so I'll have to see whether to go LTS or not. If I'm not mistaken 19.2 is LTS till 2023 so...

Thanks for the tip on h.264. I use LW for YouTube so that would really suck.
