I am curious, would nearly everyone out there always use proxies when working with 4K videos? Is that just how it's done?

Yes, I think that's the case. Proxies do have many advantages and it leaves the door open for higher resolutions, 8K and above without the need to invest in computer power of a render farm just to edit video. With proxies you can edit a 720p webcam recording and a hollywood blockbuster scanned in 16-bit RGB from film on the same laptop.

Thanks for testing the Handbrake settings.

Nothing 'insane' about QFHD (guessing that's the format being discussed) file sizes.

The following shows size information for 25 frames exported from LW as four variants of Cineform and as a 10 bit DPX sequence.

The lowest LW size is about 30:1 compression based on 10 bit DPX - some might consider that marginally acceptable for editing and work-in-progress screening.

No matter if one is a beginner or a high end film production facility the rules of mathematics apply equally.

If hardware specification, including HDD capacity and speed is not up to that task then one wonders if opting for a lower size edit-unfriendly inter-frame codec will (a) offer much better performance or (b) be anything like acceptable editing quality.

Perhaps it would be good to have DNxHD as a proxy option but failing that Cineform offers fine alternatives.

I've tried this but when i get to the last bit I don't have the Media option on the menu. is that only available in the paid version?

It isn't a Pro feature, the Pro version just has a few more formats to choose from.

The fifth entry top-down of the sub menu 'Clip Commands' in your screenshot is 'Media'.

interesting as slowing down the output rate didnt help mine, im in the process of waiting for the proxy to complete to see if that helps it. any other suggests out of interest, would it be wise to shoot at a lower frame rate in the first place?

Thank you so much I think it is working properly now! I am going to make sure I do this every time I import my footage. It now plays nice and smooth as well. I will tell you if I have any more problems with audio sync.

Thanks again, you're amazing!

Hello CallumTech,

I suspect you are referring to this topic: www.lwks.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&func=view&catid=8&id=210044&Itemid=81#210044

If you should encounter sync problems when using internal proxies, please post there.

not sure, but selecting transcode to cineform in lwks should do the job.

Lightworks doesn't support 4K with import method Transcode, currently. It's announced for next release. I won't use it for sure with 4K, due to resulting insane file sizes, even with Cineform.

Is that version 2020.1 or v15 of LWKS whatever it is named... ?

V2020.1 is the new name for V14.6, it's part of the V14 series.

V15 hasn't yet gone into beta and it will be named in the new naming system. I suspect this will depend on the year of release, most likely V2021

I can't remember what exactly I was referring to in that post. It can't be the current beta, because it wasn't released yet.

OK, I downloaded the beta version so I could natively read the H.265 files. I even set up the proxies as you post above.

Now however, even when I select a high quality "export" I get the medium quality output I was using with the proxy settings.

Help appreciated.

Hello,

'High' on the h.264/MP4 export panel refers to the h.264 encoder profile to be used, not the quality. Quality depends on resolution and bitrate.

Beside of wrong export settings for resolution and bitrate, your problem could be caused by your original clips being offline, whatever the cause is.

Delete one of the proxies of a clip which shows bad quality when exporting, what does the viewer show after deleting the proxy, high resolution media or black?

I deleted one of the proxies and it shows up as black and the timeline goes blank and changes colors as well.

I will also try exporting again and verify I have the resolution and bit rate set correctly. (Have made that mistake previously as well.)

Before you export, you have to put the original clip online again.
