Hi,

This thread is about giving feedback on the Linux version.

If you have an interesting crash?
This is the way you can find your lightworks log files.

locate lightworks | grep '\.log'

Result:
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/PooledObjects.log
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/error.log
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/log.log.log
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.1
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.10
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.11
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.12
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.13
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.14
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.2
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.3
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.4
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.5
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.6
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.7
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.8
/var/lib/lightworks/Logs/Backup/error.log.9

If you want to look inside the log file?
cat /var/lib/lightworks/Logs/error.log

I am also interested in this. Intel i7 2600K, NVidia Quadro 2000, 16GB DDR3 ram. Currently running Ubuntu 12.04 with Cinnamon UI.

VERY excited to try this on linux, and it looks like you guys are already very close to that. This on linux could change the path my company is about to take. For the better.

Not sure if lightworks will want or need someone to assist with an RPM package. I am a Fedora and CentOS user. I'm excited about lwks on Linux, not sure if they are going to release a deb package or just a tarball that can be exploded out in a directory and run from there.

I'd be prepared to bet they'll go with a deb to begin with (the most user friendly for *buntu users), however from memory I think they said that they were going to look at other distros after the Ubuntu launch. I'm sure they'd welcome packaging help after that (although personally I'd point them to the Open Suse Build Service (OBS) and just get help with distro specific package names). OBS has got to be one of the easiest ways of giving every major distro their own native build while avoiding many of the packaging headaches.

Just throwing that out there...

Heh... as long as we're getting into a "Me too" thread...

Well... uh, "Me too!" ;P

(I'd really recommend to Editshare, a more formal process for finding Linux alpha testers than just saying "Post somewhere on the forums". You brought these forum threads on yourself! Heck, even if there was just one official thread, or something.)

I'm sure there will be an announcement and email address to send your request to be a tester just like when they did this for the previous windows versions.

unfortunately Editshare is making a debian based installer and they do their internal testing on Ubutnu 12.04 as Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution that is the first one to get the latest hardware support like drivers etc.

Opensuse was my favorite Linux distribution but Ubuntu based distributions still dominates Linux world so it is reasonable for Editshare to start where the biggest ship is.
But there is Alien RPM to Deb converter which also can work the opposite way so I think many people would be interested to see if the conversion is successful so maybe Editshare will not need to create an rpm?

I love that Opensuse is very stable on their releases and instead of getting on bleeding edge, they do it smartly and polish it before releasing, yet Ubuntu wins with their out of the box experience, as much as I loved Opensuse (11.02 was my last Opensuse I tried which I absolutely loved) Kubuntu won with its out of the box way of doing things that at times seemed to configure it self very well on my computer. So I guess to try it on RPM based systems Alien is the hope for the beginning.

Danas

Reading the Alien pages it pretty much suggests it must run on a Debian based system, so it would take someone with a Deb/Ubuntu system to convert things to RPM and hope it works. this might step on some licensing issues so it would be best to wait for the Lightworks developers to release an RPM or YUM for the Redhat based systems. I will say that if it doesn't come as a package, I probably won't be able to install it without extremely detailed instructions. The only *nix I was comfortable with was Open Solaris and we all know what happened there

We did. We made an announcement some time ago for Linux Alpha testers to email their requests to us and we received a very positive response. Only those that emailed will have access to the Linux Alpha on 30th October.

Is this the announcement?

In my original post i was volunteering to help make the RPM. I would also do a yum repo as well.

How did I miss the announcement,

I remember that once there was something mentioned in one of the announcements but if the one would send a request to be included in beta testing, the one would get an answer that the beta nor alpha testing for Linux has not started yet and recommended to wait for future announcements.

Damn if I missed it I will be upset.

As seen on the support page
www.lwks.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=77&Itemid=190

"How do I become a Beta stage tester for Linux/Mac version when they are ready for testing?"
"Please post on the LWKS forum indicating this."

So I did:
www.lwks.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&func=view&catid=21&id=31420&Itemid=81

And now you are telling me something else? I really would like to help testing and debugging for the Ubuntu version. Perhaps you can PM me the email address?

Greetings Lars
