Good morning, I would try Lightworks but will not start, hangs in

Hello and welcome!
I'm just a casual Linux user on Mint18, no detailled system knowledge, especially with ARCHLinux. There have been some issues reported with ALSA and Portaudio on Linux in the past related to installed versions and settings. Please check the stderr.log file of Lightworks, does it show any recurring messages? Please note: ARCHLinux isn't officially supported by Lightworks but there are people on this forum using it who might give you more helpful advices than I can. In the meantime I'll try to help. EDIT: What kind of graphics card do you have installed? |

NVIDIA Corporation GK107GLM [Quadro K1000M] |

Did you try to install drivers provided by NVIDIA for this card?
Addidtional information: I just read in a German speaking forum that Lightworks V12.6 might not be compatible with the recent ARCHLinux kernel. The user there advised to install a LTS kernel that represents the recent kernel version of LTS Ubuntu. That would imply a larger "surgery" I guess. Maybe easier solutions exist? |

The StdErr.log says << jack server is not running >>
for now fix this error |

The StdErr.log says << jack server is not running >> You can ignore this message, if there is no Jack server, then this message occurs, also on my system. The graphics driver "nouveau" and the portaudio message above gives some evidence of possible causes. Again ARCHLinux isn't an officially supported distro and known to produce issues with Lightworks. You might get it to work or you might not. for now fix this error What do you mean, did you fix your problem in the meantime, how? |

I would like executing "jack_control start" does not see errors
as well as for all other errors |

/usr/lib/lightworks/ntcardvt: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/lightworks/PortAudio.lwd: undefined symbol: _ZN9portaudio6System14DeviceIteratorneERKS1_ This is your problem - try investigating which version of portaudio you have installed. From memory, Lightworks expects V19. |

Could this be the version? PortAudio version text = 'PortAudio V19.6.0-devel, revision 396fe4b6699ae929d3a685b3ef8a7e97396139a4' EDIT: Downgradable? |

From memory, Lightworks expects V19. Confirmed. After upgrading PortAudio from 19_20140130-3 to 190600_20161030-1 Lightworks does not work anymore: /usr/lib/lightworks/ntcardvt: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/lightworks/PortAudio.lwd: undefined symbol: _ZN9portaudio6System14DeviceIteratorneERKS1_ Until EditShare will support newer version of PortAudio, you must use an older version of the library. Try to install it from an packages archive:
wget http://seblu.net/a/archive/packages/p/portaudio/portaudio-19_20140130-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
sudo pacman -U ./portaudio-19_20140130-3-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
You may want to ignore further PortAudio updates. In that case add the package name to a ignored packages list:
# /etc/pacman.conf
IgnorePkg = portaudio
Hope it helps. Marcin PS. Dear Developers, can we expect a 12.6.0.x hotfix release, same as for Mac OS X one? A PortAudio incompatibility may affect more Linux distros and the problem may grow quite fast. |

gr00by, great discription, valuable information, good request. ![]() Downgrading just one library may introduce incompatibilities in other parts of the OS / other apps. This may result in a unstability of the end user's machine. That's why it is so important to make new LWKS build against updated PA. I'll try to workaround this in a similar way to OpenSSL's one (about an year ago) - by copying libportaudio*.so files into /usr/lib/lightworks/ directory. But this is not what a regular user want to do. ArchLinux community will probably make an package update and provide such workaround to the end users (as lwks is delivered from AUR), but other distros (which are based only on original install packages) will have a trouble. Tech specs of LWKS states that the software is compatible with Ubuntu 14, Mint 17, Fedora 20 *"and higher"*, which will not be true in the near future. Marcin |
