Youtube offers lots of free (both royalty-free and Creative Commons licensed) music in their audio library when you have a Youtube account:
Youtube audio library

The article is quite old and meanwhile there is much more music in their library. Many of the music is really awesome, which is why I'm wondering:

  1. Is the consent of using that music out of Youtube still valid? I would say yes, because Youtube derives this music from the composers, so it's actually them who offered their music as free (Youtube says you could even use that music in monetized videos)
  2. Suppose I produce a low budget feature film which hits like Titanic (or a documentary that hits BBC) and hence, becomes commercial: then if I used such content, would it still be approved? You hear me

What do you guys think?

I might be wrong, but from my understanding you can use their Audio Library on Youtube without any restrictions or license fees but, for legal questions off the platform, they suggest contacting a lawyer.

That was the information I was looking for - thank you.

So it's clear that Youtube not explicitly prohibits usage outside their platform but recommends consulting an attorney. Or maybe even better - the author of the work.

I used the Audio Library quite a lot recently for my Youtube content. First because I was bored by this try-and-error thing when using other music which sometimes gets blocked, and second because some of "their" music is really terrific.

Edit: I can imagine Youtube isn't too much happy about the fact that in the end they became a kind of stock-free music provider for practically everyone. Likely it is also because of legal reasons, that they cannot claim this content all for their own.

I think, it wouldn't be that hard for Google to be a large scale content provider, they could take over Sony Music, for instance. Just, they haven't done it, yet.

As long as they offer good stuff for free I wouldn't really care (they have what they have from me since a long time already).

If you want to use the music out of YouTube, humm, I'm not sure if something bad will happen. So my personal suggestion is just enjoying the music legally.

I think in order to stay on safe ground, in such a scenario one should contact the composer of the song(s), inform him/her about the intensions and possible prospects, and get a written consent for using the song(s), at least in form of an e-mail.

For just personal/private use this is of course overkill, however I wouldn't want one of my works becoming commercial, and then someone saying he/she wants 30% (or whatever) of the profit...
