TOPIC: Lightworks crashes when I'm scrolling through my imported clips

Lightworks crashes when I'm scrolling through my imported clips 2 months ago #194677

Hello,
My Lightworks has been acting up as of late. In the past on my laptop, it would crash regularly after approximately 2 hours of usage. On my desktop, however, Lightworks would sometimes work smoothly, and sometimes crash every 5 minutes or so. This frequent crashes occur usually when I'm working on a project with multiple imported clips and the crash occurs when I'm scrolling through my imports. My desktop is relatively new and has high specs, higher than my laptop which also has decent specs (both are geared for gaming). I'm wondering if it's because the project that Lightworks crashes frequently on has a LOT of imported clips in it (around 200 videos and 800 pictures I believe). Could that really be the reason why? If I am a fool do tell me so, so that I may learn.

Hello,

I don't think that this has something to do with the number of imported clips, but it could well be that the format of the clips has impact. Long GOP formats, e.g. h.264, need a lot of file I/O and buffering in order to refresh thumbnails and maybe, one of your hundreds of clips is damaged somehow?

What version of Lightworks do you run. Bottom center of the start screen you'll find version/revision.

Could you post the technical details of your workstation and, if you have something like a standard video format, a Mediainfo report of one of those files, please?

Thank you for the reply, also thank you so much for the link to the "Please read before.." post. I was not aware there was one. I will be sure to follow through according to that post in the future.

Thanks.

The computer shouldn't be the problem. Material on HDD might slow down access and thus refresh of thumbnails, same as still image with very high resolution (above 4K), if the HDD is slow, but both shouldn't crash Lightworks.

Could it be that the file you show has AC-3 audio?

Mediainfo is telling me that it is in PCM format. Could that be the issue?

PCM audio is uncompressed and the best performing format, no clue from this side either.

Maybe the logs can tell us a little bit more. Please force two crashes, and zip and post the entire Logs folder
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Lightworks\Logs
.

Here's the log folder. The two crashes I had before zipping this log folder managed to last longer than usual somehow (however, I was afk for about 40 minutes for each durations).

Thanks.

Unfortunately, I don't see a logged crash. It looks more like a hanging system which can have a lot of causes.

All your media seem to be placed on drive 'A:'. If that's something different from a SSD or a fast 7200 RPM hard drive, it may be part of the problem.

Personally, If I had your problem, I would divide the material in logical parts and move them to a few bins to avoid scrolling through the entire set. Maybe this way you can find the files which make trouble easier.

Re: Lightworks crashes when I'm scrolling through my imported clips 2 months ago #194712

Yes, drive 'A' is HDD. I moved all of my imported clips to my SSD drive and also went through the clips to get rid of ones I won't be using. My Lightworks has not crashed for more than 2 hours afterwards. I guess in the end, I was just trying to get Lightworks to handle more than it could. However, IF it does crash after a few hours, I never experienced losing my work after these crashes so I don't mind restarting Lightworks every few hours at all (IF it does crash). Thank you so much for your input sir hugly, you definitely gave me a better picture and idea on how Lightworks functions. Hope you have a fantastic day/night!

Thank you.

A few hundred clips are definitely not the limit of Lightworks. I've seen the logs of a project with over ten thousand clips of a guy working on a TV show. The difference, he used material conformed to industry standard intermediates, in this case DNxHD 36.
