How do I update Lightworks to the latest version?

This is a very simple process and one that requires you to just install the latest version of Lightworks into the same directory you installed the original version. By default Lightworks is installed here:

* Windows: C:/Program Files/Lightworks
* Linux: /Home/USER ACCOUNT/Lightworks (Linux)
* Mac: Drag and drop the Lightworks.app to the Applications folder within the DMG overwriting the previous installation with the latest version.

To confirm the version of Lightworks you are running check the version and revision number at the bottom of the Project Browser screen after starting Lightworks.

How do I uninstall Lightworks?

Windows: You can uninstall Lightworks using the Uninstall function in Control Panel->Uninstall a Program. Simply select Lightworks and click Uninstall.

Linux Debian distros: Open a Terminal window and type: sudo apt-get remove lightworks

Linux RPM distros: Open a Terminal Window and type: dnf remove lightworks (you will need to have the correct system privileges for this to work)

Mac: Drag the Lightworks.app to the Bin

When I attempt to install the Linux version I receive an error: AMD64 What does this mean?

This error message suggests you are trying to run the Linux Lightworks 64bit installer on on a 32bit system. (amd64 is the official name of 64bit systems, which Ubuntu uses) Only 64bit Linux systems are supported. There are currently no plans to produce a 32bit version of Lightworks for Linux on 32bit systems.

How can I reset the language within Lightworks?

Click the cogs icon on the Project Browser screen
On the panel that opens, Click "Wording"
On the panel that opens, click the cogs icon
Select 'Revert to default wordings'.

Startup

Lightworks fails to start, what can I do?

There are several things to check with regards to Lightworks not starting:

1. Make sure you are running the latest version of Lightworks (2021.2 or higher) from the Downloads page.

2.That the graphics card drivers are installed and working correctly. Please make sure that a "standard VGA" driver is NOT installed.

3. That the sound card is installed and working correctly, ie, you can hear audio coming from the system. Please make sure that speakers/headphones are connected and that the audio is enabled.

4. Intel 945/G33/G31 graphics chipsets are no longer supported. If you have one of these graphics cards, please upgrade it to resolve this issue.

5. That your DirectX is up to date. Please download the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

6. If you are running Windows Defender, please disable it and reinstall Lightworks.

Lightworks will not start and reports that d3dx9_43.dll is missing from the system. How do I resolve this?

This error means that the DirectX drivers on your system need updating. To resolve the issue download the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

When starting Lightworks on Windows I receive a message about /3GB memory, what do I need to do?

This message is simply a warning. To remove the warning, please follow the instructions documented here: https://www.lwks.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&func=view&catid=21&id=30483&Itemid=81#30487

Activation

How do I activate Lightworks?

In order to start using Lightworks you will first need to have registered on https://www.lwks.com and created a user account. Once you have confirmed your Lightworks account via email, you can use your Username and Password to sign in to Lightworks.

My system drive failed and has been replaced and reinstalled, but now when I enter my Username and Password to sign in I receive an error, what do I do?

You will lose your license if the hard drive is replaced. First you will need to install Lightworks on the new hard drive and activate the Free version of Lightworks. To help us assist you, please fill in the form provided here: https://www.lwks.com/reportaproblem telling us the name of the system Lightworks Pro has been applied to, along with any other relevant changes to the system.

When attempting activation I receive Error 4../5 cannot connect to the licensing server What do I need to do?

This error message means the version of Lightworks you are attempting to activate is out of date. You will need to download and install the latest version of Lightworks (2021.2 or higher) from here: https://www.lwks.com/downloads. You will then be able to activate Lightworks successfully.
Please also make sure the internet is present and working correctly on your system and that you have disabled any Firewalls/Anti virus software before attempting activation. If you still receive the same error, please fill in the form provided here: https://www.lwks.com/reportaproblem.

When attempting activation I receive an "Internal Error" message, what do I need to do?

Please make sure you are running the latest release version of Lightworks (2021.2 or higher) then delete the License.dat from the location below and sign back in again.
Windows 7 (and higher) Users: C:/Users/Public/Documents/Lightworks/
Linux Users: /home/USER ACCOUNT/Lightworks
Mac OS X Users: /Users/USER ACCOUNT/Lightworks

When I attempt to activate Lightworks I receive a "Licence expired" error message. What do I need to do?

This error message means the version of Lightworks you are attempting to activate is out of date. You will need to download and install the latest version of Lightworks (2021.2 or higher) from here: https://www.lwks.com/downloads. You will then be able to activate Lightworks successfully.
Please also check the Date/Time on your system clock and make sure it is set correctly. Any alterations/inconsistencies in Date/Time may cause this error.

Can I activate Lightworks without an internet connection?

Yes. If an internet connection is not present then you will be asked to start the offline activation procedure. Offline activation instructions can be found in the "Installation and Activation Guide" on the Downloads page: https://www.lwks.com/downloads.

A connection to the licensing server could not be established. How do I go about fixing this?

This indicates that Lightworks is unable to contact our licence server directly to issue the licence. Please make sure to update to the very latest version of Lightworks (2021.2 or higher) from here: https://www.lwks.com/downloads and attempt activation again.

If you connect to the Internet via a proxy server on the system please open port 443 TCP on all Firewalls and allow access to els.lwks.com

If there is no Internet connection on the system you can either temporarily add one for the duration of the activation (1min) or use the offline activation process. The offline process is detailed in the "Installation and Activation Guide" Available on the Documents tab of the Downloads page: https://www.lwks.com/downloads.

When attempting to activate Lightworks offline, the procedure does not begin. I have activated offline previously, what do I need to do?

Please make sure to update to the very latest version of Lightworks (2021.2 or higher) from here: https://www.lwks.com/downloads and attempt activation again.

If you have previously activated Lightworks offline and now the procedure is failing, you will need to delete the Shark.e2c file from here:
Windows Users: C:/Users/Public/Documents/Lightworks/Logs
Linux Users: /home/USER ACCOUNT/Lightworks/Logs
Once deleted you will need to sign back into Lightworks and the Offline procedure will begin
Mac OS X Users: /Users/USER ACCOUNT/Lightworks/Logs

When I attempt to activate Lightworks I receive a "Requested project does not exist" error message. What do I need to do?

This error message means the version of Lightworks you are attempting to activate is out of date. You will need to download and install the latest version of Lightworks (2021.2 or higher) from here: https://www.lwks.com/downloads. You will then be able to activate Lightworks successfully.

Importing

I am having problems importing a particular file, what can I do?

The list of codecs that Lightworks supports can be found here: https://www.lwks.com/techspecs Just beacuse a file is in an . AVI or .MOV container does not necessarily mean it will import into Lightworks. .AVI and .MOV files are simply containers that can contain a wide variety of codecs within them. We recommend you to download and install MediaInfo from the Tools sections of the Downloads page: https://www.lwks.com/downloads. Instructions for using and posting your information regarding MediInfo can be found in this Forum Post: https://www.lwks.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&func=view&catid=23&id=66072&Itemid=81

When I open the import tool all my clips show as black tiles, what is wrong?

If your video files are black then the pixel shaders within Lightworks are failing to load (your error.log file C:/Users/Public/Documents/Lightworks/Logs will show this) You will need to update your DirectX drivers which can be downloaded from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35. Select and install the "DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer" Once installed, please reinstall Lightworks and try importing your clips again.

I receive an error "Warning! Unable to continue - there are no available media locations"
What does this mean?

This means there is not a location where imported media files can be stored for Lightworks to use. A default media location is added in the Lightworks folder on startup, this may fail on Windows systems due to permissions, right clicking the Lightworks shortcut icon and choosing "Run as administrator" may help resolve this issue. You can manually add your own media location by following the tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSnNLdHx3Yk

Exporting

There is only an option to export as YouTube/Vimeo at 720p quality.
Why are all the other options not available?

The Free version of Lightworks has restricted file output limited to YouTube/Vimeo .MP4@720p. In order to access the full exporter profiles you will need to upgrade to Lightworks Pro. Please visit this page: https://www.lwks.com/compareversions to compare Lightworks Free with Lightworks Pro.

When I export my edit to (AVI: Matrox YUYV, Matrox Mpeg, YUYV, DVCPRO and MOV: DVCPRO, UYVY and some of the others) only Audio plays in the final rendered video when I play it back, why is this?

If you are checking back your exports in Windows Media Player, it is highly unlikely it has the codecs available to play the exported video. We would recommend downloading VLC media player from here: https://www.videolan.org/vlc/ This is a free media player that supports most codecs.

Licensing

I purchased Lightworks Pro, can I use my license on Windows, Linux or Mac?

When you purchase a Lightworks Pro license you can decide whether to activate a Windows, Linux or Mac system.

Can I use my Lightworks Pro license on more than one system?

When you purchase Lightworks Pro (Year or Outright license) you will receive a complimentary Lightworks Pro activation that can be used on a second system. Once activated the Lightworks Pro license cannot be removed. The reason we issue a complimentary activation is so that users have a way of moving their Lightworks Pro license to a more suitable system. Once the two activations have been used, you will need to purchase another. The Lightworks Pro Month license comes with only one activation.

My system crashed and I had to reinstall the Operating System.
Will I lose my Lightworks Pro license for this system?

You will only lose the license file locally on the system. Install Lightworks and sign in with your Username and Password you will then be issued with the same license file again. If you receive an error or your Lightworks Pro license is not restored correctly, please fill in the form provided here: https://www.lwks.com/reportaproblem telling us the name of the system Lightworks Pro should be applied to, along with any other relevant changes to the system.

I want to move my Lightworks Pro Licence to another system - How can I do this?

This is currently not possible with the latest version of Lightworks and the new ELS licensing service. When you purchase a Lightworks Pro (Year or Outright) license you will receive a complimentary Lightworks Pro activation that can be used on a different system. Once activated the Lightworks Pro license cannot be removed. This complimentary activation exists for this reason only.

I want to move my Lightworks Free licence to another system - How can I do this?

You cannot move the Free licence from one system to another. You can sign in using your Username and Password on as many systems as you like, you will always be issued with a Free activation for Lightworks.

My Free license has expired. Can I get another Free license?

Yes. The Free license will expire every seven days but can be renewed by simply signing back into the application with your Username and Password.

I have an old style subscription license, how do I cancel my Monthly/Yearly subscription?

You can do this form here: https://www.lwks.com/manage-billing - you will need to be signed in to access this page. Once cancelled you will no longer be billed or issued with Lightworks Pro licenses.

How can I change my credit card information for an active subscription?

If you have paid for a subscription using a credit card (PayPal is not applicable) then please sign in to your account on https://www.lwks.com and go to "Manage billing and subscriptions", or just use this link: https://www.lwks.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=account.index&Itemid=45 Your subscriptions should be listed there if you have one. Next to it is an "Update" button. When you click on it you will be redirected to another web page where you can update your credit card data. Please note: This will work only for subscriptions that are active. This will not work with suspended or cancelled subscriptions.

Does the Lightworks Pro Buy Outright license expire?

The Lightworks Pro Outright license does not have an expiry date. Once activated, the software will no longer need an internet connection and can be used indefinitely. The license comes with two activations (the same is true for Lightworks Pro Year license). The second activation is a 'reserve', to help in situations where you need to upgrade your machine, or move your license from one system to another.

The Lightworks Pro Outright license will work for the current release version which includes all version updates. When the next version is released a license upgrade will be required. You can upgrade your license by signing into the website and visiting https://www.lwks.com/activations Here you will see your Lightworks Pro Outright license with an "Upgrade" button, click this button to add the "Upgrade" product to the Cart automatically.

Hardware

Where can I download the drivers for the Contour Shuttle Pro?

Please visit http://forum.contourdesign.com for the latest installer version.

What operating systems does the Shuttle Pro support?

Only Windows and Mac OS X. Some users report success getting the driver to work on Linux, please search our Forum for potential solutions.

I have installed the Shuttle Pro drivers on Windows but Lightworks does not see the device.
How can I fix this?

Please make sure you have set the Contour Control Panel to the ‘EditShare Lightworks’ profile. This will target the Lightworks program core executable (named - ntcardvt.exe) at both the Windows 32 & 64-Bit default OS installation paths of:

32-bit installation path > C:Program Files (x86)Lightworks
64-bit Installation path > C:Program FilesLightworks
If you have installed Lightworks in a custom install path you will need to manually select the ntcardvt.exe in the install directory.

I have installed the Shuttle Pro drivers on Mac OS X but Lightworks does not see the device.
How can I fix this?

Ensure you have the correct installer package for your Mac OS X release version.

I have installed the Shuttle Pro drivers and Lightworks is working with the Shuttle Pro but not all the functions are working as I expect, what is wrong?

You will need to load the appropriate keyboard mapping file from within Lightworks.

1. Open Lightworks, enter a current project or create a new one if one does not exist.
2. On the Lightworks ‘Tools’ bar, open the ‘Editor preferences’ panel at the bottom of the panel
3. On the Preferences panel choose ’Import’
4. Browse to the appropriate xx.prefs file for the operating system you are running, select it then press ‘OK’ to apply.

- Mac: LWKS Contour Shuttle Key Mapping_OSX.prefs
- Windows: LWKS Contour Shuttle Key Mapping_Win.prefs

Will my existing Shuttle Pro work with Lightworks?

Yes, as long as the driver is supported and you target the ntcardvt.exe in the install directory, it will work.

Miscellaneous

Am I entitled to pre-release Beta versions to test any bug fixes that may be applicable to me?

Please see recommended system specs here - https://www.lwks.com/techspecs

I’ve got a feature request, should I post it on the forum 'Feature Requests' section or submit it to support?

Please post all Lightworks feature requests in the appropriate section of the Lightworks Forum. We welcome all feature requests and are happy to hear new ideas from users.

An Administrator in the Lightworks Forum asked me to 'zip up' and send the Lightworks Backup folder.
Where is this folder stored?

For Windows: C:/Users/Public/Documents/Lightworks/Logs

For Linux: /home/USER ACCOUNT/Lightworks/Logs

For Mac OS X: /Users/USER ACCOUNT/Lightworks/Logs

How do I eliminate vertical tearing on single screen as well as dual screen setups?

Windows Aero needs to be enabled, not disabled, and Vertical Sync in the NVidia control panel needs to be on.

I see the audio meters moving within Lightworks but I do not hear any audio from the speakers. This was working correctly in ‘earlier versions’. What is different?

In version 11.1 onwards we have added hardware support for Blackmagic and AJA I/O devices. If the drivers for the Blackmagic or AJA device are installed, Lightworks will by default use the device for outputting audio, it will no longer use the on board sound device in the system. You can change whether Lightworks uses the Hardware I/O or System Audio in the System Settings panel on the project browser screen.

I have lost my edit, how do I get it back?

Do not worry, your edit is still in the project you just have to search for it and open it. Open the Content Manager Tool (fourth tool from the top of the toolbox) and select the "Edits" filter and open your edit. If you have many edits and you know the name of your edit you are trying to find, click the magnifying glass icon on the content manager, type the name of your edit into the Name section and click Search (making sure "Edits" is selected under "Contents" The content manager will change view to show all the searched for edits from within your project, double click your edit to open it to a viewer or click the viewer icon on the tile.

How do I enable the onscreen playback controls (console)?

To activate and deactivate the On-screen Console go to the Editor Preferences (Figure with Cog) on the Tool Bar (left of screen) > User Interface > Playback Controls and choose Global for the bottom Console bar or On Each Viewer for separated controls on each viewer. Choose None if you wish to remove any controls completely off the screen. Useful if you want a cleaner GUI and have the Lightworks hardware Console.

Can I use the videos created with Lightworks Free for commercial use?

You're welcome to use the Free version of Lightworks for commercial purposes, directly on YouTube and elsewhere

How do I enable Lightworks across two or more monitors?

On Windows and Linux this can be done by clicking System Settings on the Project Browser screen and setting "Fullscreen window" to "No" You will then be able to resize the Lightworks application across all of your monitors.
On Mac OS X, Apple changed the way that apps behave on multi-screen setups when it released Mavericks (10.9). By default, applications aren't allowed to span monitors. You can override this behaviour by changing the 'Displays have separate spaces' setting - see here: http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac-software/tips-using-multiple-displays-os-x-mavericks-3493420/
