Hi, I've scoured the forums and the user manual for answers but am still stuck.

Trying to transfer a project from one computer to another, but am getting media "Offline".

Computer 1: I created the project and imported all the footage, as linked files, and started on some edits. The footage all resides on a folder on an external USB hard drive.

I exported the entire project (without including the video and audio) to a folder on the external hard drive.

I go to computer 2 and created a new project. I then imported the exported folder from computer 1, (which showed as "Archive"), and all my bins and edits reappeared. However, all the media files show as "Offline" and I can't "relink" them because the option is greyed out. I tried to change the drive letter of the external drive to the same as what it was on Computer 1, and I also tried starting LW as Administrator, but it didn't help.

I would like to be able to transfer projects from one computer to another regularly, so that I can take my projects on the road (on my laptop).

I think you have to import the files as "copy local", it need some more harddrivespace. And than export it as an archive.

Thank you for your suggestion, however I did not want to import as local, I do not have the space, and the files are gigabytes of video files on an external hard disk.

The only way I can get around it is to import the files again, then spend time changing all the reel ID's to match the ones in the project, then use "find material to fill edit". This works but is very long-winded wehen I want to move from one machine to another regularly.

Lightworks please address this. Re-linking to source files is a very simple thing to do in other consumer-grade media editing software packages.

Hi,
That's true, even Windows Movie Maker does it very easily
I've have the same problem and had to include the medias for it to work. But if I'm not mistaken, it had worked sometime already the way you need... I feel that the relink option is often greyed these days, but I wonder if it has not been the case everytime i tried to share a "media empty" Archive between different computers.
If your hard drive is always the same and set to the same letter on each computer, isn't it possible to use advance shared project options? (I haven't yet personnaly, but I'm surely doing it now, as i have the same needs as you).

You can still import via 'Create Link'. All you have to do, when you export your Lightworks Archive is to include video and audio material. Let me explain why.

Audio can be imported via 'Copy local' only. So you need to have it in your archive anyhow.

Lightworks stores links to the original video files in the 'Material' folder. So you need to include that as well.

It's weird that it's this way. And I don't know, when Editshare decides to adress that ambiguity. But once you know, you never forget.

Edit: You don't have to create a new project. In the Projects Browser simply click on 'Create a new Project' (there is a small grey down pointing arrow to its right) and choose 'Restore from archive'

I think it is like this because in earlyer days all material what was digitized from tape was send to a MATERIAL and Sound folder. On any disk you want. LW checkted all Material and Sound folders on the system. You had never to think about where you material was.
That changed with the file based workflows when you just link files.
