I have just experienced the same thing. I tried to import first an mp3 then a wav file without success. When I tried to import the 16 bit pcm wav file LW crashed without the usual grey progress bar--it just disappeared from my screen. When I re-launched LW, the import icon was not in its usual place but was hidden under a viewer on the right side of the screen so I dragged it back into place.

Dell Inspiron 560MT. Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 Processor (2.50GHz, 4MB cache, 1333MHz FSB). Processor. 6 GB Dual Channel DDR3 [2x2048 + 2x1024]. 1TB (7200 rpm) SATA Internal HDD. 2TB WD External 1021 SATA HDD (7200 rpm), ITB Toshiba External HDD (7200 rpm), ATI Radeon HD 5450. Samsung SyncMaster S23B35OH LED monitor. EchoAudio Mia 24/96 soundcard. Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP1. QuickTime Pro v7.7.3, Windows 7 firewall, Microsoft Security Essentials AV.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. (duel boot)
