I agree with your reasoning behind using analogue monitoring on a CRT. Checking field dominance is not possible on LCDs as most if not all will only give progressive display as opposed to interlaced where incorrect field dominance is quite unacceptable. My use of HDMI display port O/Ps is so I don't have to setup any video distribution for multiple client monitors end product viewing. I believe with the Radeon Series cards with HDMI display ports Outputs you can loop through and have several panels in different locations. A bit of a money saver.
