.MTS files support

Re: Need to vote on what formats users need first. 11 months, 4 weeks ago #23334

Support for the mkv and webm containers in both export and import. Ability to import/export using x264 for H264 instead of the propriety Apple H264. Maybe even allow unsupported formats to be at the very least imported by using external codecs with no requirement for transcoding.

As it stands right now Lightworks is pretty much useless and may as well not exist for supporters of open formats.

I'm sure you don't mean that Lightworks is useless, but it may not be good for the specific delivery formats that it doesn't support. Remember that it's an editor, though, not primarily a transcoding engine!

Well considering any footage I wish to edit is unusable without transcoding first, which would mean wasting lots of HDD space to a raw video format (and even then you can't use lagarith for example) so as to ensure as little quality loss as possible, so I believe my statement for users who wish to use open formats stands as you are not able to use them. Being able to the very least edit said formats by using external decoders would be a good step forward and it is not at all important if we can not export in the same formats as we are capable of doing our own transcodes from a raw export.

I can not really comment about Lightworks ability as a video editing tool and it is likely it is quite good at what it does and was looking forward to testing it's capabilities. Just a shame at present there is not much of an incentive for me to use Lightworks.

Well, you can see in our roadmap that we're moving towards Open Source - which is more than any other professional NLE is doing - and that's probably the point at which these "Open" formats get supported. (That's just my view on this).

And this is very good to hear and was the main reason for originally getting me interested in Lightworks. That there also seems to be good communications going on between users and the Lightworks teams is a very good thing!

I do love how you quote "open" as there are so many patent issues that can crop up, though my personal view is that patents should not really exist in software due to the way software works and builds upon others works (well of course out right copying is out of the question depending on the authors wishes) but that is not really a conversation for here.

For now I guess I will just have to wait and see how Lightworks develops. I do have some H264 footage in that horrible Apple MOV container that I want to eventually edit (sadly you still end up being forced to use propriety formats with pretty much any and every camera) and may try using Lightworks then.
