Thank you thank you - I was just being stupid...
I thought I was looking at an edit but it was just a viewer with timeline.
Not sure why these are designed to look so similar!

You can turn a tile viewer/timeline into an edit by selecting record and by inserting another clip it turns into an edit, complete with the edit timeline buttons.

It's just an aspect of Lightworks flexibility... You can also change a bin into an edit. It's something that's worth experimenting with
