TOPIC: Potable Version

Potable Version 1 year, 7 months ago #15302

I would love to have a portable version of lightworks!
Want to do some cutting with my pupils and the problem is I can't install programms on the schools computers. Besides I want my pupils to have the opportunity to use lightworks also at home...
I have a portable version of Premiere CS3 but besides the fact that I don't have the possibility of installing the German dictionary I only have a teachers licence, so I can't give it to my pupils...

Would be really cool to have a Lightworks Portable. I used Windows Moviemaker with my last class but it sucks. When they get started being creative possibilities in moviemaker end.

Thanxs

What do you mean by 'portable'? It runs fine on laptops, even netbooks, if that is what you mean. The beta is free for them to install at home.

If it's to run it from removable storage, I thin that is a step beyond, going from turnkey systems to usb-sticks ... but you can try installing it on a stick and see if it runs from there on another computer.

Portable means it does not install, just runs from wherever you have it stored. There are utilities to make many applications portable. That said I'm not sure if Lightworks can be made portable because it relies on the registry too much for setting, etc.

You might need to wait for the Linux version and then you should be able to roll this up into a Live disk. There might be a way to make a Windows LIVE disk and have this installed onto that Live version, might be worth some time to research. FYI having computers locked down in education is normal, all of our "smart" classrooms (classrooms with computers and projector) and all other "student use" computers are locked up with DeepFreeze. You can install things but as soon as it reboots the computer is back to the disk image where it was frozen. It works really well for most things but it a complete pain when you start getting into virus scanner updates and OS updates.

well by portable I ment runnig it from a usb stick. In my case probably an external drive but for my pupils it would be the usb stick.
Already tried making it portable but as expected it needs the registry to run so it won't run on another computer.
good idea to make a bootable windows with lightworks installed on it. Maybe if I install the portable virtual box put my old xp on it and then insatall lightworks.
I just see two problems with that:

1) Windows is Copyrightprotcted so I can't multiply it an give the drive to my pupils
2) The Speed. Our computers are terrible old and slow and this way i have a lot of processes running which will slow down everything even more...

@ Greg_E: Would be nice if it were DeepFreeze or some common Rambo system. Then I could get myself the password, add lightworks and some other stuff to the image and everything would be fine, but it is some special educational system where not even our network admin is able to install anything. Not even updates... Well bottomline it is a pain in the ass so I decided to make a portable Stick with all the software we need.

Well I just hope there will be a simple solution to make lightworks portable soon.

If you can boot off of USB or CD then Linux may be your best choice when it arrives.

Has anyone tried LW running on ReactOS yet? Probably won't run but might be worth a try.

Yes, I have a laptop which is not really high in specs especially CPU and RAM. I prefer video editing programs that do not slower my pc.
